Doesn’t standardization make adoption of passive solar design easier?
To some extent, standardization could increase adoption by developers of mass-produced homes. At
the same time, however, it contributes to the devaluation of design and diversity itself. Also, as a result
of these templates, a suite of negative stereotypes regarding passive solar design have emerged. These
further impede its adoption. Many of the ‘excuses’ for not applying eco-logical design principles may
stem from boredom inspired by the replication of standardized passive solar design templates. This
is a criticism that has been levied against the BedZed project in London, for example.
17
The idea that
green design is ‘boring’ could partly be attributed to the unimaginative solar design templates that
are presented in educational materials. Several architecture teachers have explained their resistance
to green design to the author by saying passive solar design is ‘ugly’. One could see this as a failure

103
Design Methods
of design ability among architecture teachers. Conversely, this could be because so many people
not
trained in architecture design passive solar homes, due to a vacuum caused by the architecture
profession [Box 25]. It should be emphasized that the rebuttal to nearly all the stereotypes would be
that ‘it all depends on the design’. That is, the problem is not the solar design principles themselves,
but poor application. In addition to a lack of design imagination, there is a failure to optimize space
for the needs of both humans and nature. But this is essential where space is increasingly scarce and
costly.
Why is it essential to use space for both natural systems and human functions?
The emphasis of (conventional) urban design has been on social engineering, managerial processes
and mechanical efficiency.
18
Thus, as we have seen, urban consolidation has often been undertaken
in a manner that eradicates nature from buildings and cities [Chapter 3]. The creation of ‘dead space’
(lifeless or privatized space) in so-called green planning and design is due partly to the confusion
between:

A city’s
spatial footprint
(land area) and
•
A city’s
ecological footprint
(total area required to support its material and energy
consumption)
Since urban space is at a premium in dense urban areas, the norm is still to ‘zone’ buildings – as well
as cities – to achieve minimal interior and exterior spaces for each function and human activity.
Ostensibly, the aim is to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse emissions in energy intensive
functions like transport or the heating and cooling of buildings. But these aims are not necessarily
achieved by smaller, specialized or single-function spaces. On the other hand, large high-rise buildings
with open plan flexible interiors also manage to create ‘dead’ office spaces with stuffy, polluted air.
At the same time, the zoning or separation of social and environmental functions tends to exclude
or choke off natural systems. Few buildings are designed to support plant life – the ‘canaries’ in our
urban ‘coal mines’.
19
Likewise, outdoor urban spaces are usually designed wastefully because they
are used only as decorative backdrops. Urban landscaping often seems to be merely embalming fluid
for dead architectural forms. Through the multi-functional use of space, however, we can create
positive synergies between social and biological functions, while using resources more efficiently
from a whole systems perspective.
