“American dream” is invisibly present in all American literature of the 20th century. This is 
one of the traditional themes of the American novel, which received different interpretations and 
evaluations at different stages of the development of literature.In the first half of the twentieth 
century, American literature is developing rapidly. Such a bright creative personality as Theodore 
Dreiser declares himself.The relevance and novelty of this work lies in the fact that in modern 
literary criticism not much attention is paid to how and by what methods the author expresses his 
own point of view and life position.Many aspects of the problem remain unexplored and not yet 
fully clarified. **Each of us has ever come across such an expression as “the American dream”, 
maybe it was some article, book, Internet or the same film, and many thought about what is 
included in this concept? And why, for example, is there no French, Italian, Russian dream? 
Perhaps because the very concept of "American Dream" has become an ideological cliche. It is 
believed that the lifestyle of human is active and dynamic, they are successful, businesslike and 
decisive. Any self-respecting person should have: his own business, a car, a loving wife, children, a 
two-story house in the vicinity of the city. And, of course, how can we do without everyone’s 
beloved democracy and religious pluralism? Here, everyone, regardless of social status and origin, 
is equal before the law, at least that's what propaganda of the American way of life sounds like. In 
general, everything that every self-respecting person should strive for, andIn the concept of 
“American dream”, this is very well shown.
