Allen wrote: "the Appearance of Dreiser with his skeptical view of the "American dream" produced
a genuine revolution"[4]
Dreiser took the material from his own life and used it in the novel and a little bit from a
murder incident. One of his brothers was being jailed for forgery, one sister was seduced by a
politician in Terre Haute, and when she became pregnant, she was discarded. Later when another
sister bore an illegitimate child, it fell to the care of his mother. Later, Dreiser took up the job of a
stock boy in a hardware store in Chicago, as Clyde does it in a collar factory. Like Dreiser, he takes
the job step by step and finally from the small sponsor goes to a higher profession of journalism and
editorial section, Clyde also moves up the ladder of success methodically. One of the most telling
characteristics of Dreiser reflected in Clyde was his education, which was miserable and “blazing
with sex” (Dreiser, The Moderns 1878) consumed by yearnings for wealth, display and power. The
best way to achieve these, was to marry into the charmed circle of wealth. He had an image of a girl
in his life, who would be both rich and sensual. Meanwhile not finding her, he used to meet
destitute girls as hecould find to his purpose and disposed each one of them when they had served
his need. This concept serves as the main theme of the novel leading to disaster.
The structure of Dreiser’s work entirely depends on the temper of the age. It depicts the
money panics, the increasing violence in the labor wars, the growth of the great slums, the fear of
the middle-class, with the concentration of wealth on one hand and the threat of wealth on socialism
on the other. With all these, he also viewed business as a crucial concern of American life. In
general, Dreiser said that “America is not great because of, but in spite of her pieties and her
moralities because the great business men had been strong enough to do as they pleased” (Dreiser,
The Moderns 1887). In fact, here it is necessary to note that America developed as a nation because
of her industries and technology that yielded high productivity.
The novels "American Tragedy" and "Sister Kerry" saturated with the experiences and
participation of the author, anxiety for the fate of the heroes, understanding of the actions that they
perform under the pressure of capitalist, bourgeois society. In Theodore Dreiser's novels, he
reproduced the America of his time with amazing accuracy, down to the smallest details; he wrote
each of his novels on the basis of his own experience and observations, as well as materials
collected with the utmost accuracy and scrupulousness. That is why his novels are characterized by
detail, a detailed description of American life and, as a result, an impressive volume. Dreiser
denounces the "American dream", criticizing both the ethical, political, and religious plans of the
concept. Dreaming of a beautiful life, wanting to escape from poverty and break away from his
family, Clyde does not stand the test of the ghostly light of luxury and goes to crime. Here Dreiser
blames not only Clyde, because he is weak and immature, but also the environment that pushes him
to this act, because in the bourgeois society of America, financial success, external gloss is
cultivated. Material wealth becomes the measure of happiness. In conclusion, I want to say that the
work of Theodore Dreiser crowns and completes the development of American naturalism and
paves the way for naturalism and critical realism of the 20th century.
In fact, the term “American” dream can be interpreted in both a broader and a narrower
sense. Broadly speaking, the American dream refers to equality, freedom, and democracy. In a
narrower sense, it is a certain belief that every human has a better life in store for them, in which all
their dreams will come true, regardless of class order and family heritage, just make the appropriate
effort and do not retreat before difficulties. In other words, the fate of a person directly depends on
their hard work, courage, creativity and focus on their own prosperity, while waiting for help from
the outside leads to a dead end. Everyone should be responsible for their actions and seize every
chance for their own well-being, sent down by fate through determination and hard work. In
conclusion, I want to say that the work of Theodore Dreiser crowns and completes the development
of American naturalism and paves the way for naturalism and critical realism of the 20th century.
