Our intercourse with the speakers of a foreign language is realized not only through speech 
and through the reading of their literature in the wider sense, or of their various published writings, 
but also through correspondence, or the exchange of written messages. Accordingly, the aims of in-
struction in a foreign language include, besides speaking and reading it, also writing it. Every 
secondary-school graduate must be capable of writing a letter in the foreign language he has 
studied, to keep up a correspondence in it with friends living abroad. Writing in the foreign 
language is also a very important means of instruction in it. As a means of instruction writing serves 
to consolidate both acquired linguistic knowledge and habits of using the language. Professor 
Gruzinskaya aptly called writing "a universal consolidator", on the grounds that in the exercise of 
this activity, simultaneous motorial sensations and visual perceptions, invariably accompanied with 
suppressed articulation and voice-production and with mental sound-perception impress themselves 
durably on the learner's memory. 
The foreign-language teacher will use writing for consolidating knowledge of the 
vocabulary, of grammar, and even of phonetics. For example, if the pupils do not pronounce 
sufficiently distinctly the words

, and are uncertain which vowel sound occurs in 
which of these two words, the teacher can write these words on the blackboard in two different 
short sentences, such as: 
first listen, then speak, 
and: 
better late than never, 
and cause the pupils to 
write down the sentences in their notebooks and lo pronounce them. Through recourse to combined 
visual, motorial and auditive perceptions, he will secure the correct pronunciation of those words by 
the pupils. A clear idea of the graphic expression of a word helps to identify and understand it in a 
text, and facilitates the use of the dictionary. This applies especially to homonyms:

etc., very numerous in English, - and to paronym: 
wonder 
–
