Counter-Complaining
Definition:
When someone expresses a complaint or criticism, you counter
with a complaint or criticism of your own, ignoring what the other person has
said.
How this might look in a conversation:
“You didn’t clean your dishes again...”
“Well, the bathroom you said you’d clean is still filthy!”
This sign of defensiveness shifts both blame and topic. The second person
has a good reason to feel frustrated (because the bathroom still isn’t clean).
It’s clear that, in the past, they made a request that has not yet been fulfilled.
However, that is not what the first person was talking about.
In this case, the second person is absorbed in what matters to them instead
of focusing on the first person’s concerns. The first person will feel that they
have not been heard, and not unreasonably, both will end up frustrated.
