Primrose Excursions Itinerary for August 7- 15, 2017
Day 1 August 7 CALGARY: GATEWAY TO THE ROCKIES. We’re met at the airport by our host from Château Isabella. Calgary is the oil capital of Canada and home of the famous Calgary Stampede and Chuck wagon Races. The "Spirit of the West" is kept alive in this booming oil town with over 1 million residents. After our "get acquainted" dinner we head west through rolling foothills, following the Bow River to Banff National Park. The next 2 nights are close to the quaint shops in downtown Banff. Expect to see mountain goats, mountain sheep, cougar, elk, deer, and bear as we travel the valleys in the parks. (D)
Day 2 August 8 COLUMBIA ICEFIELD PARKWAY – ATHABASCA GLACIER. We follow the Bow River Valley to the charming village of Lake Louise. An included gondola ride gives a breathtaking view of the Valley below. After lunch we follow the Ice field’s Parkway to the famous ice fields in Jasper Nat'l Park. An optional thrilling guided Snow Coach carries us right out on the glaciers. Then we head back to Banff for more shopping and exploring (B,L)
Day 3 August 9 MORAINE LAKE – LAKE LOUISE. This morning we see Bowl Falls and the Banff Springs Hotel. We return to Lake Louise and see the beautiful Moraine Lake and The Valley of the 10 Peaks. We will absorb the historic beauty of Lake Louise and see the famous Château Lake Louise. Heading south, we stop for lunch, then travel through rich farmland, arriving at Château Isabella, just east of Waterton National Park in time for a wine reception and a delicious home cooked dinner. Day 4 August 10 NO PACKING, NO DEADLINES. Time to relax and enjoy a field trip to Police Outpost Lake. There are wildflowers and nature trails. Smell the roses. After lunch at the Château we will relive the horse and buggy days at the Remington Carriage Center, the largest collection of horse drawn carriages in North America and voted Canada's Best Indoor attraction. Day 5 August 11 WATERTON\GLACIER INT'L PEACE PARK. Today we visit Cameron Lake fed by Mountain glaciers and Cameron Falls. A two nation narrated motor launch trip on beautiful Waterton Lake, surrounded by towering mountains, takes us into Montana’s Glacier Nat'l Peace Park, then back to Waterton. During the wild berry season, we are sure to see bears when we go to Red Rock Canyon. Bring your camera. (B,L,D)
Day 6 August 12 CHIEF MOUNTAIN – GLACIER NAT'L PARK, MONTANA. Chief Mountain, the sacred Mountain of the Blackfoot Indians, dominates the landscape as we travel into Montana. We will see Sherburne and Swift current Lakes and the historic Many Glacier Hotel, nestled in our area of the Rockies, often referred to as The Switzerland of North America. Afterwards we visit a Hutterite Commune and learn of their culture and history (B,L,D).
Day 7 August 13 FORT MACLEOD RCMP HISTORICAL MUSEUM – HEAD SMASHED IN BUFFALO JUMP. The romance of the Northwest Mounted Police lives on in historic Ford MacLeod. While visiting the Fort you can relive the history of the "Men in Scarlet". In route we pass through the largest Indian Reserve in Canada and observe how the famous Blackfoot Indians survive in today's world. After lunch, more Indian lore at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump, dates back more than 6000 years. (B,L,D).
Day 8 August 14 GOING THE SUN HIGHWAY – LOGAN PASS - Glacier Nat'l Parks famous Red tour buses take us past rugged peaks, weeping walls, and high alpine meadows. The Highway follows and old Indian Trail used by the Flathead Indians as they crossed the great Continental Divide. Breathtaking scenery from the top of the world. (B,L,D)
Day 9 August 15 HOMEWARD BOUND. Today we sadly board our motor coach for the trip to Calgary. All too soon we are on a plane, heading home with dreams and precious memories of the many friends, great food, and fabulous scenery we've experienced the past 9 days. (B).
