Test Specification

As discussed in the above chapter (6), a table of test specification must be prepared based on the syllabus. The following table provides the details to be included in the test specification.

Once the table of test specification is prepared, the tester’s next task is to select appropriate texts for each question.

    1. Selecting Texts

The tester will consider the following points in selecting texts for listening tasks:

  1. A text intended for reading purposes should not be used in listening tests. A radio-advertisement is more effective than a newspaper advertisement.

  2. Authentic texts such as announcements, news bulletin, radio-advertisements can be used. The test situation and task should reflect the real life situations. For instance, we never listen to an announcement and answer questions. But we may listen to an announcement to complete an information grid.

  3. Listening texts naturally include a lot of redundancy to help listeners in various ways. These texts include features of spoken discourse. Such features must not be left out in the test version.

  4. It is necessary to be sensitive to the length of the texts and its difficulty level. Unnecessarily longer texts, generally used in reading, must be avoided.

  5. The texts should be interesting but not biased. They should not arouse emotions of the candidates.
