Guidelines for Writing, Administering and Scoring Test Items

The tester has to attend to a number of practical problems in administering the test in addition to test item writing. The following points should be given attention:

  1. At first, the tester should note down main/interesting points and decide tasks which could be included in the paper. He can prepare several tasks from a single text and choose the most suitable one to test the sub-skills included in the test specification.

  2. To ensure a higher degree of reliability, the questions must be arranged in the order as they appear in the text.

  3. The test items which can be answered without listening to the text should not be included.

  4. The ambiguous test items should not be included.

  5. Simple and clear instructions must be used. Instructions must be clearly delivered before the students attempt the task. The tester may check if all the candidates have comprehended the instructions. He may use the first language for instructions if necessary. The test item should test candidate’s ability to listen, not his test taking ability or ability to understand instructions. This will help the tester to maintain higher degree of reliability.

  6. The test items which require minimal demand on writing should be used. Partial marks can be given when relevant. But it is not advisable to deduct marks for spelling and grammar errors.

  7. The tester can decide whether he chooses to use a recorded version of the text. It will help him to maintain uniformity in testing conditions. But it is important to make sure all tape recorders function in identical way.

  8. If a recorded version is not used, it is advisable to use a single person for reading out the text to all the classes, if possible. This will also help the tester to have uniform standards needed for reliability. Where this is not possible, the individuals can be trained in administering the test.

  9. The tester must also make sure that testing situations such as acoustic conditions are identical in every place where the listening test is administered.

  10. The examiner’s role is different from that of written tests. The examiner should elicit language behavior of candidates and at the same time judge his speech performances.
