Guidelines for writing and scoring Test Items

The tester must pay attention to the following matters when setting reading test items:

   After selecting a suitable text, the tester should note down main/interesting points and decide tasks which could be included in the paper.

   In a test item which assesses students’ ability to extract specific information, the questions must be arranged in the order as they appear in the text.
   
3. 
   The test items which can be answered without reading the text should not be included.
   
4. 
   The test items which involve simply matching a string of words in the question with that of the text must not be included.
   
5. 
   The test items which are ambiguous should not be included.
   
6. 
   Simple and clear instructions must be used.
   
7. 
   The test items which require minimal demand on writing should be used.
   
8. 
   Partial marks can be given when relevant. But it is not advisable to deduct marks for spelling and grammar errors.

Testing Listening Skills
Listening is the skill where the listener reconstructs the message of the speaker. It should not be seen as a mere passive skill. It is an active skill in which the learner is engaged in communication. In listening, the listener cannot move backward in a text as in written texts. Therefore, testing listening can be considered challenging.
In many tests, listening skill is ignored. The immediate result is that teachers pay less attention to this skill in classroom teaching. Therefore, it is important to give due consideration to listening skill in test papers.
Listening, just like reading involves a number of sub-skills. The listener’s task may include identifying the main idea of a text, extracting specific information, relating one part of the text to another, taking down notes, following instructions etc.
