Introduction.
Dombey and Son occupies a special place among the works of Charles Dickens. Firstly, this work ends two of the most important periods of Dickens ' work (the 30s and 40s) and sums them up in a peculiar way; secondly, the novel opens a new stage of the writer's work (the 50s). It focuses on brilliantly worked-out, polished techniques of irony and humor and uses new methods to achieve a comic effect (subordinated to new ideas and problems posed by the author) - methods of satirical representation.
It is a novel byCharles Dickens . It was first published in monthly installments between October 1 , 1846and April 1 , 1848, and in a single volume in 1848, with illustrations by Hablo Knight Brown.
The full title of the novel is Dombey and Son Trading House. Wholesale, retail and export trade".
The book tells the story of a shipping company whose owner is disappointed that he does not have a son to help with business at work. He initially rejects his daughter's love, but eventually reconciles with her before dying. The plot features many Dickensian themes, such as marriage, child abuse, betrayal, deception, and relationships between people from different classes.Satire is “a kind of comic; a merciless, destructive reinterpretation of the object of the image (and criticism), which is resolved by laughter. This is a way of artistic reproduction of reality, revealing it as something perverse, incongruous, internally untenable. Satire “models” its object, creating an image of a high degree of conventionality, which is achieved by directional distortion of the real contours of the subject.… The aesthetic “super-task” of satire is to excite and revive memories of the highest values of life, offended by baseness, vices, rudeness and stupidity” [II; 1: 370]. Satire makes fun of phenomena that seem vicious to the author, and its power depends on the social significance of the phenomenon that the author describes, and on the choice of means of implementation.
The subject of the satirical image is various phenomena that bring evil, and both human qualities and social vices are ridiculed.
Main ways to implement satire:

  1. hyperbole (a technique based on artistic exaggeration of certain properties of the image. It is used to enhance the emotional impact on the reader, in order to highlight some feature in the image more clearly);

  2. sharpening (the giving of any direction of the phenomenon or object of attention, which is expressed in a constant return to its description);
    c) the grotesque (in this case used as a combination of fantastically disproportionate means with hypercalciuria any phenomena);
    d) trails (metonymy, metaphor, epithet, comparison); irony, allegory, the author's assessment; special vocabulary.

The story concerns Paul Dombey, a wealthy shipping company owner. The book begins with the birth of his long-awaited son. Dombey's wife dies shortly after giving birth. Following the advice of his sister, Mrs Louisa Chick, Dombey hires Mrs Tuddle, a kind and simple woman, the mother of a large family, as a nanny to her newborn son, obliging her to change her name to Richards and not to keep in touch with her own family (too "vulgar" in Dombey's terms). Dombey already has a six-year-old daughter, Florence, whom he constantly neglects and bitterly regrets that she is a girl, "a fake coin in the capital of the firm." One day, Mrs. Richards, Florence, and her young nanny, Susan Nipper, secretly visit Mrs. Richards ' home in Stegs Gardens so that Mrs. Richards can see her children. During this trip, Florence, who is lost in the hustle and bustle of the street, is tricked by an old beggar woman who introduces herself as good Mrs. Brown, takes off her expensive clothes, along with remembering and crying about her own daughter in distant lands, and then lets her go, having previously intimidated her. The girl makes her way to the business part of the city, where, by a happy coincidence, she meets a young employee of her father's company, Walter Gay, who takes her to the house of his uncle, an old ship's toolmaker, Solomon Gills, from where she is taken home by her own nanny. As a result of the uproar caused by Florence's disappearance, Mrs Richards is sacked - Mr Dombey is angry that his son was taken to the slums - and young Gay becomes the object of Mr Dombey's dislike.
