INTRODUCTION
In linguistic science modal words and word combinations are considered one of the most controversial lexico-grammatical classes of words and have been attracting the attention of scientists since the second half of the XX century. However, modal words have not yet received a complete explanation because of their versatility, specificity of linguistic expression and functional peculiarities. The topicality of the research topic is caused by the necessity of all-round theoretical consideration of the category of modality, means of its expression, systematization of modal words, determination of their status. Thus, insufficient scientific systematization of the category of modality and means of its expression in English determined the choice of the topic of this work. The aim of the research is to reveal the essence, describe and comprehensively analyze modal words as a special part of English language speech, as well as to consider modal verbs as one of the ways of modality realization. The object of research is the category of modality. The subject of the research is modal words in modern English as the main lexical means of expressing modality. In accordance with the goal in the work the following tasks are set: 1)to study the literature on the problem; 2)to determine the essence, specificity and main features of the category of modality; 3)to characterize the main modal verbs, modal words in terms of their lexical composition; 4)to describe modal words as means of expressing credibility; 5)to identify the syntactic functions of modal words. The following methods are used in the work: theoretical literature analysis, comparative and descriptive. The methodological basis of the work was the research works of V.V. Vinogradov, G.A. Veikhman, E.M. Gordon, V.N. Zhigadlo, I.P. Ivanova, L.I. Iofik, K.N. Kachalova, I.P. Krylova, and others. Practical significance of the work is stipulated by the possibility to consider the results of the study as a fragmentary part of the complex study of the functional-semantic category of modality and means of linguistic representation, its constituent components. This largely determines the scope of practical application of this course work, the materials which can be used in the course of modern English, in special courses on the problems of modality.
