Listening As mentioned in the above, it is estimated that 50% or more of a 
person´s time in communicative situations is spent on listening (Wagner 2014). The 
important role of listening is also obvious in language acquisition. While listening 
is a subset of general language ability and it shares many features with reading, there 
are characteristics that are unique to listening. Buck (2001) noted that “listening 
comprehension is a process, a very complex process, and if we want to measure it, 
we must first understand how that process works”. As in the case of reading

Has no difficulty in understanding any kind of spoken language, whether live 
or broadcast, delivered at fast native speed

Can understand enough to follow extended speech on abstract and complex 
topics beyond his/her own field, though he/she may need to confirm occasional 
details, especially if the accent is unfamiliar.
Can recognise a wide range of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms, 
appreciating register shifts.
Can follow extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and when 
relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly.
