Some children find some subjects such as mathematics and philosophy too difficult to 
learn, so some people argue that those subjects should be optional rather than 
compulsory. To what extent do you agree or disagree? 
Nowadays, more and more students have difficulties in studying mathematics and 
philosophy. A section of pupils neglect subjects such as mathematics and philosophy since 
they feel them a quite harder. I believe that maths should be compulsory subject in schools 
even if students find it hard to learn but the freedom should be given to them regarding 
the selection of philosophy. 
On the one hand,there are some benefits of making mathematics obligatory for school 
going children.
Maths is the base of all other subjects and children should be taught 
numerical techniques from childhood which would make them more smart and help them 
to think critically.
Secondly, numerical ability is essential for people to pursue their career 
as many high paid jobs require analytical thinking which is only possible with a good 
mathematics base. Finally, mathematics influences the power of making connections 
between theory and applied situations.
On the other hand, I also assert that philosophy should be made optional due to the 
following reasons.
First and foremost, school children are too immature to learn about the 
complexities of human relationships and their level of understanding the depth of the 
concepts regarding philosophy is weak. Moreover, they can learn those skills better from 
parents in an informal way by just observing them. For instance, there are so many things 
like how to behave in society, how to respect someone, how to help others etcetera which 
they automatically learn by watching their elders.
Last but not least, they are already 
overburdened with too many tough academic subjects to make them competent for 
acquiring sufficient skills or knowledge and studying extra subject like philosophy would 
make it even more complex for their studies. 
In conclusion , it can be reiterated that maths should undoubtedly be compulsory as it 
becomes the need of the hour to survive today in this era of technology / competition 
whereas philosophy can be left for college or university studies.
