The Influence of Hotel Price on Perceived Service Quality and Value in e-tourism

Data Description

The data used in this empirical study were obtained from a popular third-

party website, daodao.com (http://www.daodao.com), which is the official 

website of Tripadvisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com) in China.

We developed a Java program to collect data for this study in February 2011. 

To avoid the influence of location (Ye, Law, & Gu, 2009), we selected all the 

available hotels in a single city, namely, Beijing in China. At the time of data 

collection, 1,063 star-rated hotels in Beijing had been registered on daodao.

com, including 130 five-star, 273 four-star, and 660 three-star and below. We 

obtained all the posted reviews for each hotel, making a total of 51,880. 

However, not all the data were available for analysis due to missing values. We 

excluded reviews that did not show a price for one night. As a result 8,154 

reviews were eliminated, resulting in a final data set of 43,726 reviews of 774 

star-rated hotels.

We collected the following data for each review as it appeared on the web-

site: reviewer ID, comment, comment date, price for one night, overall rating, 

perceived value, comfort, location, cleanliness, service, hotel ID, star rating, trip 

type, and ranking within the list of all Beijing hotels. Table 1 provides the data 

description for this sample.
