11650. Another soldier lad lays down his life as a result of experiences in the world war. After a long illness Frank Earl Bailey died at Camp Kearney. Born October 29, 1892, near Arrington, Kansas, Frank grew to manhood, a dependable businessman, a careful accountant … On May 27, 1918, he enlisted in the A. E. F. and returned to Camp Dodge, Iowa, June 16, 1919, and was sent immediately by the government to Whipple Barracks, Prescott, Arizona. He remained in different hospitals until his death at Camp Kearney, September 30, 1921. Frank Bailey is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bailey of Holton. He leaves besides his parents, two sisters, Amy and Lois, both in Manhattan and two brothers, Fred, of Okeene, Okla., and Preston of Holton … placed to rest in the Larkinburg cemetery … The Holton Recorder, October 13, 1921.

11651. Minerva Britton was born December 30, 1853, at Morris, Ill., and died October 4, 1921, at Netawaka, Kan., aged 67 years, 9 months and 4 days. In the year 1870 she was married to Stephen S. Sparks. To this union five children were born, three girls and two boys: Lydia Young of Holton, Kan., Alice Van Meter of Alliance, Neb., George M., and Clarence O. Sparks of Weatherby, Mo., and Ethel Wessel of Goff, Kan. In the year 1878 they came to Kansas and located at Beattie, where they lived until 1908, when Mr. Sparks died. In the year 1912 she was married to William Root of Netawaka, where they lived until she was called away by death. After going to Netawaka she united with the M. E. church and was also member of the Ladies’ Aid Society of that church. Besides the husband and five children she leaves seventeen grandchildren, other relatives … The body was taken to Beattie … lowered into the grave at sunset. The Holton Recorder, October 13, 1921.

11652. Miss Rebecca Galloway was born in Xenia, Ohio, and died in Holton, Kansas, October 5, 1921, at the home of her nephew, George A. Gordon. She was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Galloway of Xenia, Ohio, where she lived all her life on the same farm until coming to Kansas to make her home with her nephew five years ago October 15, where she passed her declining years. She had one brother, Richard Galloway, who lived and died in the old home in Xenia several years before she came to Kansas. She also had one sister, Lydia, who was the wife of Andrew Gordon and lived near Holton since coming to Kansas in 1871 … She raised and cared for five orphan children, being a mother to them until they went out on their own. This was characteristic of the Galloway family, caring for orphan children or those who had no one to care for them. It was her request to be taken back to the old home and laid to rest besides her father and mother, brother and sister, there to await the resurrection morn. 11653. Eliza J. Taylor was born at Portland, Ohio, November 17, 1834, and died October 4, 1921, near Mayetta, Kansas, age 86 years, 10 months and 14 days. She was united in marriage to Thomas H. Landon, January 8, 1852. The fruits of this union were ten children, consisting of six girls and four boys, of whom four girls and one boy preceded her in death and she leaves to mourn her loss Mrs. Sarah Hancher of Whiting, Kan,; Mrs. Lena Peters, Kansas City, Kan.; J. E. Landon, Meriden, Kan.; T. J. Landon and Earl Landon, Mayetta, Kan. … Mother Landon had a great number of grandchildren and great grandchildren … joined the Methodist church … Mother Landon with her children came to Holton Kan., in March, 1889, and has always lived with her son, T. J. Landon, ever since coming to Kansas … interment was in the Holton cemetery …
Mary Javannah Landon was born near Muscatine, Iowa, February 17, 1857, and died October 1, 1921, at Mayetta, Kan., aged 54 years, 7 months and 14 days. In early childhood she moved with her parents to Jackson county, West Virginia, attending school at Ravenswood. In 1887 she came to Kansas and has spent the reminder of her life in Jackson county. The last several years she has made her home with her brother, T. J. Landon and family near Mayetta … united with the Methodist church South of Ravenswood, West Virginia. In 1906 she united with the Methodist church at Mayetta, Kan. … She has been an invalid and physical sufferer for more than a year … She leaves to mourn her loss two sisters and three brothers, besides nieces and nephews … interment was in the Holton cemetery.

Harry Ephreum Nevins was born November 1, 1890 at Arrington, Kansas. He died January 5, 1924. He was 24 years, 2 months and 5 days old. He grew to manhood near Arrington. January 1, 1921 he was married to Aletha Faye Hoenshell. To this union was born one child, dying in infancy. He became a member of the First Christian church at Atchison a year ago … for over a year Mr. and Mrs. Nevins lived in Atchison where he was employed by Weis Manufacturing Co. He leaves his wife, Aletha Faye, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Nevins, of Arrington, Frank Nevins of Arrington, Jess Nevins of Arrington, John of Whiting, Will of Valley Falls, Mrs. Ernest High of Atchison and Mrs. John Jackson of Effingham. 11660. From the Olathe (Colo.) Criterion.] Ethel Laverne Johnson, second oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson, was born at Soldier, Kansas, Nov. 3, 1906, and departed this life October 6, 1921, at the age of 14 years, 11 months and 3 days. With the exception of four years spent at Oakley, Kansas, she lived all her life at Soldier until she moved with her parents to Olathe where she lived just one month. She had always enjoyed the best of health until two weeks ago she was stricken with typhoid. Ethel graduated from the graded school last spring and entered the Olathe high school, this fall, which she was able to attend just 8 days. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Sunday School, near her home the past 4 years … Besides her heart broken parents she leaves to mourn her loss two brothers, Allen and Kenneth, and four sisters, Edith, Dorothy, Frances and Avis … burial in the Olathe cemetery. 11661. Boyd Fritts was born at Holton on August 24, 1921, to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fritts, and died October 19, 1921, his age being 1 month and 25 days. He had been sick nearly all the time since his birth. Mr. and Mrs. Fritts, the father and mother of the deceased, came to Holton last March from Kentucky. 11662. Banner Grange. On Monday, October 17, the family of Mart, Cecil and Raymond Riley motored to Horton to attend the funeral of Mrs. Margaret Porter, the grandmother of the Riley boys. She was almost 98 years old and worked almost up to the day of her death. She could see to thread her own needle for sewing up to about a year ago. The Holton Recorder, October 27, 1921.
Mrs. Mollie Riley returned from Horton Monday, where she had been visiting. Her mother passed away and was buried while she was there. Mr. and Mrs. Fain Riley, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Riley and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Riley were also present at the funeral. The Holton Recorder, October 20, 1921.
11663. Circleville. Word was received here last week of the death at Raton, N. M., of Mrs. J. B. Harper, who lived here a number of years ago. She, with her son, Hayward Baker, had been traveling for several months through Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and California, hoping to benefit her health. They visited friends here the past summer … the interment was at Marshall, Mo. She leaves two sons, Claude and Howard Baker. The Holton Recorder, October 27, 1921.
11664. Hoyt. Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Steward and Mrs. Armilda Steward went to Council Groves last Sunday to attend the funeral of their nephew, Herbert Steward, who died October 30, 1918, in France, of wounds received in action. Herbert was born near Hoyt on February 9, 1892, later moving to Council Grove with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Steward. He was in Company I, 353rd Regiment, 89th Division. Hoyt. Laura Evelyn Steward was born in Jackson County, Kansas, June 4, 1873, and was married to R. J. Ellis March 7, 1906, in Topeka, and to this union two sons were born, Virgil and Howard. Howard died in June, 1920, and Mrs. Ellis died at their home near Perry, February 16, 1922. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband and son Virgil, one sister and six brothers. She was a member of the Christian church in North Topeka. … she was laid to rest in the Perry cemetery. 11668. Maggie Rachel Akright was born at Port Andrew, Richland county, Wisconsin, December 27, 1868, and passed away October 9, 1921, aged 52 years, 6 months and 21 days. When three years old she moved with her parents to Jackson county, Kansas where she grew to womanhood. On February 15, 1887, she was united in marriage to Frank Ross, who departed this life April 7, 1914. To this union were born four sons, Charlie and Marvin, who passed away in infancy; and Harry and Harvey. 11671. Naoma Norman was born in the year 1883 at Centralia, Kansas. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Norman. She has four half brothers, as follows David F. Ryan, of Fla.; Cornelius C. Ryan, of Kansas City, Mo.; Chas. G. Ryan of Hayden, Col.; and Wm. Ryan living in Whiting … she spent her early life in the town of her birth, and in 1903 she met and became the bride of Ora Fees, of Whiting. They came to Whiting to reside, and since that time have made this town their home. She became the mother of three happy children … they survive her, with the husband, and are as follows; Gertrude Lucile, Lois Augusta, and Norman Edna. … in the year 1919 … she became afflicted … breathing her last of earth on the 25th … Mrs. Fees was a long and patient sufferer, having suffered for many months, at times undergoing the surgeons knife … she was just at the noontide of life, being only thirty-nine years and seventeen days of age. … she was borne away to the “silent city” “Spring Hill Cemetery’ overlooking the little home town …
Whiting. From the Journal.] T. S. Fees was in town Wednesday attending the funeral of Mrs. Ora Fees. Among those coming from Holton to attend Mrs. Ors Fees’ funeral were Mr. W. R. Lentz and mother, Mrs. J. W. Lentz, Mrs. Elton Spiker and the Stone brothers, John and Bob. Mrs. Ora Fees died Tuesday morning at her home. 11673. Jay Tyler died Tuesday, at the home of his brother near Horton, and was buried in Wheatland cemetery Wednesday. Mr. Tyler was a bachelor, and had made his home in the vicinity of Whiting and Horton (with the exception of a short time spent in Oklahoma) for about forty years. … Whiting Journal, November 4, 1921.

11676. The funeral of Mrs. J. S. Williamson was held at the residence Monday afternoon at 2:30. She passed away November 5, after a long illness … since 1889 she had lived in Holton and vicinity … Her daughter, Mrs. John Martin, of Pittsburg, Pa., had been her constant companion and cared for her during the last months of her sickness. The other children, Mrs. L. N. Brown of Lawrence, Mrs. M. G. Monroe of Fairview, Mrs. J. H. Koch of Holton, and Mrs. Scott Williamson of Alva, Okla., were all present at the funeral. Mrs. Etta Line of Omaha, Nebr., was with her at the time of her death. 11677. Muddy Creek. Irene Brooks was born in Fayette county, Indiana, February 1, 1839. There she lived and grew to womanhood. After her marriage to Joseph B. Dale she moved to Jamesport, Mo., from there they came to Kansas and settled in Sedgwick county. From there she moved to the vicinity of Meriden, where they resided until the time of his death. After the death of her husband she made her home with her nephew, John Elliott, of Hoyt until November 1st, 1914, when she was married to Wm. Elliott of Sterling. The remaining years of her life were spent at Sterling, where she passed away on Friday, October 28. During the last few years of her life she was a great sufferer, having entirely lost her speech over a year ago. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, a brother, Aurelius Brooks, of Parsons … The Holton Recorder, November 10, 1921.
11678. Mayetta Department. Mrs. Sarah Page was born June 30, 1844, in Ohio, and died October 13, 1921, at her home near Lexington, Oklahoma. Miss Sarah Bowen was united in marriage to John Page in February, 1861, in Jackson county, Kansas, and to this union were born four children, two of whom have passed away. In 1890 Mr. and Mrs. Page came to Oklahoma, settling on a farm near Lexington, where they resided the remainder of their lives … At the age of fifteen years Mrs. Page was converted and united with the United Brethren church at Soldier Valley, Kansas … she leaves to mourn their loss two daughters, Mrs. Ed Ross of Lexington and Mrs. Clara Duke, of Port, Oklahoma, besides other relatives … interment was made at the Wanette cemetery … Lexington Okla., Leader. 11679. Following a stroke of apoplexy seven weeks ago and several reoccurrences in the interim, C. A. Buck died at his residence in Oskaloosa last Wednesday morning at 9:15 … Mr. Buck was the second son of the late Dr. C. A. Buck, a pioneer of this county who came from Illinois in 1857. Charles at the time was ten years of age. Here he grew up, was married in 1872 to Miss Emily Morrison, and on his farm near Oskaloosa raised his family of four sons and two daughters. His immediate family surviving him include his wife, Con and Jay Van Buck of Topeka, Fay Buck, Enterprise, Kan., Mrs. H. L. Johnson, Oskaloosa, Mrs. Robert Dick, Topeka.

11680. Ruhamah Jane Montgomery, daughter of W. A. and Martha Montgomery, was born April 5, 1851, in Adams county, Ohio, and died November 2, 1921, at Holton, Kansas, at the age of 70 years, 7 months, 28 days. She came with her parents to Jackson county in 1869. She was a charter member of the Reformed Presbyterian church at Denison, and when the United Presbyterian church was organized she became a charter member of the church with which she remained the rest of her life. She was united in marriage January 11, 1876, to Jonathan Smith Saunders, who died April 1, 1914. To this union four children were born, one dying in infancy; Mrs. Effie Beard, Upland, Calif.; Elmer A. and Bruce Saunders, of Holton. She was also the mother of seven step-children, John F. Saunders, deceased; Mrs. D. M. Roberts, El Dorado, Kan.; C. J. Saunders, Mrs. R. B. Crozier, Frank Saunders, of Denison, Kan.; Mrs. Hugh W. Wark, deceased; and Bryon R. Saunders, Denison, Kan. Two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Mary M. Milligan of Santa Anna, Calif.; Lizzie G. Montgomery of Denison, Kan.; W. O. Montgomery, Topeka, Kan., and C. W. Montgomery, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. 11684. Alice M. Davis was born in Jackson county, Kansas, January 20, 1862, and departed this life at Holton, Kansas, November 13, 1921, her age being 59 years, 9 months and 21 days. She was the youngest of a family of fourteen children. She lived on a farm the larger part of her life with her brother, Jim, who took the place of her father until his death, June 15, 1914. Her father died when she was quite young. After her brother’s death she continued to live on the farm near Birmingham until June, 1918, at which time she moved to Holton, where she lived until the time of her death. During her girlhood she made confession of her faith in Christ and united with the Methodist Church South at New Harmony … She leaves to mourn her passing two sisters, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Fanny Bowser … Burial was made in the Holton cemetery.
