Chapter II : The Grapes of Wrath; a Literary View
2.1 Synopsis of the Grapes of Wrath
The writer begins the story by describing the destroyed harvest in the farm in Oklahoma. He goes on describing the condition until Tom Joad, main character , shows up walking on the way of home. Tom is given a permission to leave prison after serving four years in McAlester prison for a murder charge. Tom comes across Jim Casy and he asked her to live with his family s house. As they were walking on foot and talking on the way of home. Casey disclose his loss of confidence and doubts over the pre-established religious teachings to Tom and that he is not a preacher who is a someone who talks about a religious subject in a public place, especially at a church anymore. Although, Tom`s family house is in sight, Tom notices that the house is destroyed. The writer begins to describe inner description of Tom. Tom is sad and begins to wonder about his family`s whereabouts, about the destroyed lands, the exhausted corps, and the yellow tint to the grown. From that unpleasing atmosphere and Tom`s state of being, their neighbor who is farmer, Muley Graves ,comes out and report Tom about his family that they get from their lands and have to move to his uncle John`s house who lived west , California. They have already moved like most of the farming families in Oklahoma. Tom and Jim begin their travel to find the house of Tom`s uncle. He knows that his family have sold almost all their owning they could and they have left the ones that they need in their travel west to California. Tom, with no second thought decides to find his family westwards although his permission to leave the prison confines him within the borders of Oklahoma. As they have been in the finishing touches of leaving, Grampa did not want to leave his born home so the family agrees to stay his alone him out so that they can carry him along without he knows about it. Like all the westward migrant workers their journey begin to faced some hardships on their journey along Route 66. The first they lose the family dog. The night of their departure day they usually spend their night along the roadside with other families who are migrate like them , where they meet the Wilsons and make friends with one another. The travel hardship that the Joads live is while Grampa dies after going through a hard illness. Hence, they bury him along the roadside. Then the two families go on together but after a several miles, the Wilson`s wagon breaks down, fortunately, Tom and Al have an experience with fixing wagons. After some time the Wilsons‟ car breaks down once again and again Tom, Al and Casey came behind to fix the car and continue the rest westwards. After finding the necessary spare tool for the Wilsons‟ car, Tom and Al return from the junk yard place where old or broken furniture, cars can be left, or bought and sold. The Joads find dwelling house at one of the roadside camps to spend a night. Contrary to their hopes of finding jobs, they begin to hear upset stories about the working conditions and the lack of jobs in westward. A man who is returning from California coming back home to Oklahoma tells the story about families about his tragedy, how his wife and child die of starvation. The man demands that the promises of work in the flyers are a fraud and that 25,000 men showed up while the real needed number of workers is 900 so it is not value losing effort to keep up the way westwards.
The questions goes on and new ones are born but not the unity of the Joads. The oldest child of the family and Connie, the husband of Rose and pregnant daughter get illness and abandon the group not only within the family, but also other families like as the Wilsons begin to collapse. They make a decision to remain behind like the wife Sairy Wilson, is too sick to continue . Having crossed the river Colorado, 7 the police stops the Joads. Ma Joad tries to use a strategy of begging-like to allow them pass without checking saying that that they have an old sick lady with them. She emphasize that to hide the fact that Granma Joad is indeed dead.
Joads go on until they find one of the Hoovervilles where they stayed finding for jobs. The feelings in Hoovervilles campsites has not been pleasing, there has been hard aggression among the not caring about danger migrants, ill old people and hungry and angry parents. Ma has been always faced with hungry kids who do not obey their parents and behave badly while she looks after for her family. Like all Oklahoman people, the family of Joad has been upset to from the bad sign called the Okies helped them by the people of California. But this has not gone on until they move to Weed patch campsite, a government camp for migrants where no police officers worrying residents from time to time, there are also bath rooms , toilets, running waters, other necessary rooms and music each Sunday.
Usually angry arguments always take place in campsites between police officers and migrant workers . Now, as Tom and some migrant people are discussing wage with the contractors who agrees to do work or provide goods for another company. Deputy Sheriff tries to catch and sent to prison one of the men but Tom joins the argument. When the fight turn to sharply , Tom pushes him and then Casey knocks down the Sheriff subconsciously. Casey has been there for the police to send him to jail instead of Tom so that he will not be sent back to jail for disobeying the police.
While they stay in Weed patch, Tom, eventually, finds the family a tube fixing job for two days. Tom learns some plans to disturb the camp from Mr. Thomas who is his employer on Saturday night dance so that the police would have a pretext to shut-down the facility. The Joads family spends a month in Weed patch without house. After then, they leave for Hooper Ranch, where they pick peaches for high wages.
At that time Tom heard that most of migrant workers and the important head of them is Casey run strikes. Without thinking Tom takes part in strikes organized by Casey. After some time Tom and Casey ear able to persuade several working men have been on a fight with strike breakers. This strike is finished with one of breakers murdering Casey with a pick handle. Tom angrily revenges Casey`s death by killing his murderer.
To keep the family out of the problems Tom makes decision to find a new job firm another place. Yet, Ma gives her appropriate idea of leaving the Hooper Ranch to a cotton field northwards. Up to his time , nothing is known about Tom`s decision , while the family works at day time and rests in the cart where Tom hides in the forest nearby. All plans has been going well until Ruthie Winfield who is Tom's youngest sister, tells everything off and tells another girl about Tom. When Ma find outs about it immediately reports Tom. Hemake’s decision to go away the family and find shelter elsewhere, and he informs s Ma of his sudden plans to resume the dream of Casey who has lost his life for it.
The story finished with the family having been working together without Tom for days during the season of rain. One rainy day on the camp, the Joads family have been trying to reach their goals instead of leaving because they have to stay for the pregnant Rose of Sharon suddenly falls into work. When she successfully has the child, they move to wood inside which they meet a starving old man with a young boy. Rose of Sharon tries to survive that man she breastfeeds the dying man.8
