General information about Gafur Gulyam

• Gafur Gulyam was born in Tashkent in 1903, in the family of a poor peasant.
• His father was a literate person. He read yhe works of Uzbek and Tadjik classics and wrote poems. He also knew the Russian language. Already at the age of ten Gafur Gulyam read the works of Alisher Navoi, Khafiza and Saadi.

General information about Gafur Gulyam

• In 1912 Gafur Gulyam lost his father. 1913 his mother died.
• In the autumn of 1916 he began to study at “The Eight Samson Russian-native School ”.
• After the death of his mother Gafur Gulyam worked first at a printing-house as a type-setter, then he began to study at eight month pedagogical courses.

Life activities

• In 1919 he worked as a teacher of an elementary school.
• At the time Gafur Gulyam under the influence of Navoi and Mukumi decided to try his hand at poetry.
• In the years 1924-1928 Gafur Gulyam worked as the secretary of Komsomol Comitte of the Tashkent City department of education and as a director of a school boarding house.

Life activities

• He wrote humours stories, feuilletons which were published in the satirical magazine “Mushtum”.
• In 1930 Gafur Gulyam translated Maykovoskiy’s poem “At the top one’s voice” into Uzbek language.
• In the post war years Gafur Gulyam wrote number of poems which were included in separate book.

Gafur Gulyam’s works

• The title of the poems are: “The Lights of Uzbekistan “ , “How do you do”, “ Mothers” “Time”, “The Komsomol”, “The manuscript of Glory”, “Moscow- the Bulwark of Peace”, “The Song of Dawn” and others.
• Nearly all Gafur Gulyam’s works have been published in the Russian language. Many of his poems have been translated into other languages of the Soviet Union and foreign countries.
