Planning a presentation lesson
Normally a presentation lesson will have an outline like this:
Revision of key language areas
Example presentation, which could be from a textbook or given by the teacher
Students identify key stages of the example presentation – greeting, introduction, main points in order of importance, conclusion
Focus on linking and signalling words ('Next…', 'Now I'd like you to look at…', etc.). Students underline these in the transcript/place them in the correct order
Students are put into small groups and write down aims
Students then write down key points which they order, as in the example
Students decide who is going to say what and how
LEARNING LANGUAGES THROUGH THE SONGS, POEMS
In this modern era of globalization, the global world makes foreign languages one of the important things in communicating. Many people think that learning a foreign language is not easy until they do many ways to master the foreign language. Actually, learning a language is very easy and fun. We can learn language through various media, such as song or poetry. Learning English through songs and poetry can increase our enthusiasm for learning English better. That is because learning English through songs and poetry is very interesting and fun, the rhythm contained in a song can help to remember words better, and also poetry with beautiful words can add to our vocabulary. In addition, learn English from songs and poetry is very simple and practical because we can access the song or poem via our smartphone which we can do anywhere.
As pointed out by Çakır (1999) as well, music can be a wonderful medium for natural language learning. Songs are comprehensible, enjoyable, authentic and full of language we need in real life. They are part of our lives and they are around us. In fact, songs have been part of the human experience for as long as we can remember. Songs have become an integral part of our language experience, and if used in cooperation with a language lesson they can be of great value (Schoepp, 2001). By learning English through songs, it can improve memory and understand vocabulary more effectively. Songs can also improve our listening ability and help to develop our pronunciation skills with good intonation. Learning English through songs can create a fun atmosphere and it is not easy to feel bored. The notes contained in the song will make the mood happy too and makes us comfortable and begins to be lulled by the tone and language that is conveyed.
“A poem is a piece of writing in which the words are chosen for their beauty and sound and are carefully arranged, often in short lines which rhyme” (Collins Cobuild, 2001). This definition, which contains no reference to comprehension of difficult metaphorical, cultural, or ethical allusions, and nothing about grammatical correctness, metrical structure, sentence structure or logical sequencing of ideas, opens the doors to pop-songs, haiku, pattern poems, picture poems, nursery rhymes and folk-songs, all of which can be viewed as poetry. By stressing enjoyment, and presenting poetry “through media and methods that provide maximum student involvement and interest” (Brindley, 1980, p. 1), not only can language learning can be facilitated, but learners at all levels can use the medium of poetry to express themselves in the target language.
