Task 1: Guidance Document for Operation of IETS (CO1, PO1) As a new appointed IETS engineer, you’ve been given several tasks to ensure the IETS working in good condition. You are required to prepare a complete proposal and submit to Environmental Regulatory Compliance Monitoring Committee (ERCMC) for the improvement of IETS operation to ensure the compliance with Standard A, Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulation 2009 (IER2009). The proposal should include several tasks as follows:
Prepare the process description of IETS including the working principles (or function) for each of unit operation and its operating condition (i.e operating pH, chemical dosage, etc.). This document is prepared to be used as reference for operators, technical staffs and engineers who are responsible in operating the IETS
Proposed Answer Task 1 Equalization Tank Equalization tank is an equipment at early stage of treatment acting as a buffer to receive water from collection pit. Its main function is to steady the flow rate of wastewater.
Coagulation Tank Coagulation tank’s function provide the addition of chemical(coagulant) such as Ferric Chloride (FeCl3) for sludge thickening, solids dewatering and removal of solid from wastewater system. This process is to neutralise the particles charges before sending to pH adjustment tank.
pH Adjustment Tank Wastewater pH varies in value, as there are too acidic or too alkali. As final discharge pH value should be in 6.0 - 9.0 as stated in standard A compliance. As in company M, produce wastewater at pH value of 5.6, therefore an addition of alkali substance such as Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution should be added to the tank to neutralize the parameter outlet ranging from 7.0 – 7.5 of pH value.
Flocculation Tank The next treatment involved of flocculation process where coagulated solids are bonded together to form a larger particle in water. This process is to make the separation of solids and liquid easier.
Clarifier After the solids in wastewater are in larger form, next treatment will involve in clarifier process which normally involve in primary and secondary treatment. Clarifier is used to remove the suspended solids from the liquid.
Treated Water Holding Tank Treated water holding tank is used as a temporary storage of sewage water before removal or transporting to other places. Company M uses 2 treated water holding tank which involve after the primary clarifier and the second is after the secondary clarifier.
Aeration Tank Aeration tank involves the process of adding oxygen into the wastewater to allow aerobic biodegradation of organic materials. The supplied oxygen able to utilize by the bacteria in the wastewater to breakdown the organic matter.
Sludge Holding Tank Sludge holding tank is a storage of biosolids and serve as a location for thickening solids before removal.
Sand Filter Sand filter involves in tertiary treatment process for the purpose of purifying the water and making it safe to drink. Sand filters remove bacteria and small particles from treated water.
Activated Carbon Filter After the sand filtration process, treated water will be then further treated in activated carbon filtration process. It is a technology of adsorption of contamination and removal or organics such as chlorine, fluorine from water. This process is for drinking purpose.
Belt Press Belt press is used to remove water from liquid wastewater residuals and produce a non-liquid material. Belt presses remove sludge by gravity and usually referred as ‘sludge cake’. Sludge cake is a resource produced from final dewatering process and are ready for disposal.
