Abstract
This study explores the use of authentic articles as a means to enhance the critical thinking skills of B1 level students. The research investigates the impact of using authentic materials on students' ability to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information from diverse sources. The study employs a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test/post-test control group to compare the effectiveness of using authentic articles against traditional language instruction.
The participants were 40 B1 level students from a language school in [insert location], with 20 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. The experimental group received a treatment of using authentic articles, while the control group received a traditional language instruction. The authentic articles were selected based on the students' interests and relevant topics that aligned with the B1 level curriculum. The treatment involved a variety of activities, such as pre-reading and post-reading tasks, group discussions, and writing assignments that encouraged critical thinking.
The results showed a significant improvement in critical thinking skills among the experimental group, indicating that the use of authentic articles is an effective method for enhancing B1 level students' critical thinking skills. The findings suggest that the use of authentic materials can contribute to a more engaging and meaningful learning experience, where students can develop their critical thinking skills while learning the language.
In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence for the effectiveness of using authentic materials, particularly authentic articles, in language instruction to enhance students' critical thinking skills. The study contributes to the field of language education by highlighting the importance of using materials that reflect real-life contexts and challenges that students may encounter in their daily lives.
