Narindjan-baba

The Narindjan-baba Complex (XIII–XIV centuries A.D.) is one the most sacred and worshipped places in Karakalpakstan. It is represented by a multicompartment group of buildings. Its initial nucleus was a mausoleum. The gravestone of a saint is located in its centre.

Tombstones with epitaphs found within the territory of the monument are now kept in the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Regional Studies in Nukus.

Narindjan-baba was discovered in the XIII century by Muslim leader Mukhtar Vali, who built a new mausoleum building. A room for pilgrims was added later. This place was often used for Sufi rituals (zikr). In the early 1990s the Narindjan-baba Complex was rebuilt again and its gravestone decorated with marble.

Sultan Uvays-Baba

The Sultan Uvays-Baba complex (XVII–XIX centuries) is one of the most revered places in the lower reaches of the Amu Darya. Its name is associated with the name uwais al-qarani. According to legend, he was one of the followers of the Prophet and lived in the village of Karain in Yemen.

Scientists believe that the construction was built by Sultan Muhammad Khorezmshah, but was destroyed during the Mongol invasion. In the early nineteenth century the Khan of Khiva Altuser builds a new building. The last construction of the mausoleum is attributed to Khiva Khan Allakuli (XIX century).

Today, the construction is a complex with a fairly developed infrastructure: a mosque serving the complex, "Holy pond", shopping centers, food outlets, a hotel, etc.
