Kurgashin-kala

The Kurgashin-kala Fortress (IV–III centuries B.C.) is situated 17 kilometres north of the Djanabas-kala monument. It has a rectangular shape. Its well-preserved walls reach a height of 14 to 16 metres in some places. The lower part of the walls is constructed of rammed clay, while the upper walls are decorated with square brick masonry with tamga. They are reinforced by a construction of three towers on the long sides of the wall (excluding the angular ones) and by a single tower on the short side. All sides of the wall except the southwest are surrounded by a barrier wall.

Apparently the Fortress was protecting the interior areas of Khorezm from invasions of the steppe tribes.

It is believed that the name of the fortress is derived from the Turkic word for lead, a metal mined not far from there.
