Examples of extracurricular activities
Extracurricular activities are subdivided into 3 major groups plus two combined forms:
1. Academic and common interests circles. These are a very important part of student’s life. Teachers believe these circles develop personalities of students and broaden their scope of vision. The requirements for the circles’ meetings are clearly defined. The topics are useful for everyday life of students, complement the material studied in class at particular moment and are chosen in regards with students’ queries and their age group. The aim of circles is to broaden the topics previously covered in class and study them in depth. The types of circles included: extracurricular home reading, translation and interpretation, Communication, Drama, Choir, Hometown studies, and Game circles.
2. Mass events Examples of these extracurricular activities are song or poetry recital contests in the EL; theme parties or evenings, theatre performances in the EL or performances of companies staging dramas in foreign languages, holding conferences in foreign languages, having debates and meetings in English.
3. Individual work This type of extracurricular activities can include: preparing for conference presentations, preparing for reports in class, and writing articles for school newspapers or magazines.
4. Another type of extracurricular activities is correspondence with students from other countries - it can be classified as both individual work (when a student has a pen-friend) and mass work when students keep correspondence between their circle and a group of students in another country with similar interests.
5. Language clubs - yet another form of extracurricular activities in schools basically combined various above listed language-oriented extracurricular organized in all educational stages.
Nowadays most schools, lyceums and colleges have changed their attitudes to extracurricular activities, and started encouraging their faculty and students to organize different kinds of extracurricular activities. The teaching materials and methods are being modernized and updated according to the present day academic needs and technical opportunities.
Extracurricular activities are widely used in our educational system too, especially for the subjects of English, Mather Tongue, Math and Geography. A lot of schools have circles from different subjects after lessons. For example, It is recommended to pay attention to the following issues in the "Young Botanists" garage, which will be organized with students in grades 5-6. "Development of botany in Uzbekistan", "Study of the views of the great scholar Ibn Sina on medicinal plants", study of wise stories and habits about the importance of plants and their preservation, indoor plants classification, care and reproduction, study of biological and ecological properties of medicinal plants, plants included in the "Red Book" of Uzbekistan, etc.
One of the Uzbek scientists who have done research on extracurricular activities is J.Tolipova. She studied the usage of extracurricular activities and suggested some of them. One example of extracurricular activities is called ‘Circle of young biologists ‘ for school children on the 5-6 th form .
Most colleges consider some form of volunteer work or community service a must-have for all applicants. The best way to gain volunteer experience is to consider the activities you enjoy and find a way to apply them into your service hours.
For example, if you enjoy art, volunteer at a local children’s center to help kids with their creative processes. If you love to play music, volunteer to play at a local senior center.
Coach your local little league team. An animal lover? Shelters are always in need of great volunteers. There are so many easy ways to apply whatever you love to helping out in your community – just think creatively!
Being published in any form – whether it’s the student newspaper or another form – is an impressive accomplishment. Most college courses require writing as a basic skill and being published demonstrates you’re not only capable of writing, but actually good at it. Mastering this critical college skill looks great on your application because it shows that you’re active outside of the classroom in an activity that will translate to the likelihood of academic success in college courses.9
If you’re concerned about your lack of extracurricular activities because of your job, don’t be. Colleges know that many students don’t have the luxury of participating in extracurricular activities because they must work to help support their families.
Participating in sports is a great way to showcase your teamwork, leadership skills and that you place an emphasis on athletics and physical fitness. While athletics are a platform to demonstrate these important traits, it is common for students to participate in them and may not hold as much significance as when balanced with other activities.
As with anything in life, balance is very important to keep in mind. It’s ideal to try to choose activities from different categories, both social and academic, so that colleges are able to see your wide range of talents and strong character traits.
