Not very well. It’s quite painful.

I was helping to carry heavy boxes to the 

garage and I dropped one on my foot.

Examiner

Oh dear. Well, it’s very swollen and bruised. I 

think I’m going to send you for an X-ray, just to 

check that nothing is fractured. 

Candidate

What do you mean by fractured?

Examiner

Broken. There are many small bones in the 

foot. They can be quite easy to break.

Candidate

Oh, I see.

Examiner 

It’s important to keep your weight off the foot in 

the meantime. Keep your foot up, preferably 

higher than your body.
