Director’s Report
In 2014 the library spent considerable time planning for a future that will the meet needs of its ever-changing community of users. The library began a process of surveying it’s community to understand the variety of services that would be used if offered by the library. The library plans to continue this community fact gathering and informal conversations in 2015. Results from our first survey have been analyzed and the library is currently planning programs that respond to community interests.
The library had its most successful annual fund campaign thus far which was made possible by its devoted residents.
The 2014 annual holiday fundraiser “Halloween Homicide in the Town of Dark Cloud ” was held in October this year. The South Park Community center was transformed in a haunted mansion thanks to the artistic talent of Michelle Gwynn. The Throughline Theatre Company of Lawrenceville guided the audience through murderous events of the evening.
In 2014 the library provided three large-scale family events that are starting to become a well-known and attended tradition. Our Winter Carnival held in mid-January, Valentine’s Day Party (Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory) and Holiday Party(A Charlie Brown Christmas) hosted guest in the hundreds.
We hosted two New York Times Best Selling authors in 2014; Luis Carlos Montalvan the author of Until Tuesday and Bob Cranmer the author of the Demon of Brownsville Road. Both of our author talks were extremely well-attended and enjoyed by all. The library continues to provide training for uploading newly added digital collections to portable reading devices throughout the year. The Allegheny County Library Association consortium added additional e-book titles and two new electronic resources; Hoopla (downloadable audio and video) and Freegal (downloadable music) to our electronic offerings.
The South Park Township Library Tea committee volunteers continue to be busy hosting popular teas throughout the year. The “Gilded Age” tea was particularly popular with its Downton Abbey fashion show and British styled tea.
An important staff addition happened this year with the hiring of librarian Jeff Connelly as a full-time librarian.
The library is grateful to its municipal government, library board and Friends organization that work together to support a community-driven library.
Sincerely,
Sharon Bruni
Director, South Park Township Public Library
