Come work with South Boston en Acción to provide high-quality ESOL instruction for adult leaders and learners in South Boston! We are a member-based organization that works on leadership and community development among Latino families living in public housing in South Boston. With that in mind, our ESOL program teaches leadership skills together with English, and seeks opportunities for our students to put what they learn into practical use within the community. We’re looking for a Student Support Specialist to be part of a young program that is growing quickly in a warm, welcoming community.
Job Title: Student Support Specialist.
Summary:
The Student Support Specialist meets one-on-one with ESOL students to identify challenges that inhibit participation in class and guide students in addressing these challenges. This person also provides referrals to students who need them and advocates for students when necessary.
Duties & Responsibilities:

Work with students to identify and address challenges that inhibit participation in the ESOL program.

Guide students in setting goals and creating realistic, effective plans for reaching goals.

Provide crisis intervention as needed.

Refer students to other agencies or organizations as needed, and assist or advocate for students seeking resources such as childcare, emergency assistance, or other educational opportunities.

Collect and maintain data on student outcomes relative to efforts and interventions.

Occasionally assist with outreach, intake, assessment, and orientation. Assist with reminding students about important dates and events, such as the beginning of a new cycle.

Meet regularly with ESOL program staff and participate in program evaluation and improvement.

Engage in continuous improvement.

Other duties as requested.
Qualifications:
-
MSW or LCSW preferred, or Bachelor’s and equivalent experience.

Experience working directly with immigrants and immigrant community in an advocacy or empowerment position.

Verbal and written fluency in English and Spanish.
-
Sensitivity to and experience in working with a primarily female population.

Knowledge of local resources preferred.
Schedule:
-
10 hours per week through June 30 2017; 5 hours per week thereafter.

Flexible, must be available at least 1-2 weekday mornings or early afternoons to meet with students.
