Dear Friends:
On this anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, I hope you will find a few quiet moments in your day to reflect on those lost in 2001, and on our response to it -- both as individuals who lost loved ones, and as a nation which has been at war ever since. I have discovered that my own children are too young to remember what happened on that day, and I am realizing that as much as I would rather not talk about it, it is important to tell the story. The need to respond appropriately to the events of that day is a current challenge: Neither letting fears and anxieties get the better of us, nor failing to bring it up.
The Bible Study this evening has been canceled for this week.
This Sunday in worship I will be preaching on Matthew 18:21 - 35 "Forgiveness Googolplex" is my sermon title. Jesus challenges us to forgive 77 times...I'm thinking about big numbers and big grace. Christian Education begins for all ages this Sunday. Our new part-time Director of Christian Education, Jaimie Crumley, will be greeting the children and getting on board with the programs. Make sure to introduce yourself!
All youth (middle school and high school) are invited to participate in making bag lunches for the Loaves and Fishes ministry. We will make sandwiches and pack lunches on this Sunday, September 14 during the second part of the service. (We will leave immediately following the anthem.) We plan to pack bag lunches on the second Sunday of every month, thus continuing our successful program of last spring. If you have any questions, please contact Mindy Shilansky.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST! Save the Date: The Social Action Committee and the FBC Youth Fellowship invite you to our "All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast" on Saturday, September 27 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. Come fuel up for your day with pancakes, sausages, juice, and coffee! The cost per person is $8 for ages 12 and over and $4 for children 11 and younger. Vegan and gluten-free options will be available. The proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the FBC Loaves and Fishes Bag Lunch program. All are welcome, so feel free to bring friends!
Church World Service has made a special appeal for the children who are refugees coming across our southern border. This appeal is over and above what they have been doing already, as most of you know, CWS is on the ground around the globe when crises erupt. This appeal for additional assistance would be funded through One Great Hour of Sharing. Checks can be made payable to "First Baptist Church" and on the memo line write: OGHS "unaccompanied children."
If you have a copy of Temporary Shepherds that says "from the John P. Webster Library" inside the front cover, please return it and exchange it if you like, for a copy of the book that the church owns. We will be sending the library's books back to them in the next month. The Webster Library's books can be returned to our church office.
From the Inter-Religious Eco Justice Network:
