Bishop

Michael Maldonado

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (sometimes referred to as the LDS church or Mormon church) are organized into congregations that are either called wards (approximately 300 or more members) either called wards (approximately 300 or more members) or branches (smaller congregations). A ward is led by a bishop and two counselors, who constitute a bishopric. Branches are led by a branch president and two counselors, known as a branch presidency. The bishop and branch president have similar responsibilities.

The history that led to the establishment of the East Brunswick Ward dates back to the early 1930’s. Originally called the New Brunswick Branch, our congregation in central New Jersey was formally organized on February 5, 1933. It encompassed members of the church that lived in Metuchen, Plainfield, Princeton and Monmouth County. On June 4, 1944, it was realigned and the name was changed to the Metuchen Branch. Total membership was around 30 individuals. In 1955 the unit was again designated as the New Brunswick Branch. On February 28, 1960, the New Brunswick Branch became the New Brunswick Ward, which signified the growth of the church in central New Jersey.

On January 9, 1972, with construction completed on our current building at 303 Dunhams Corner Road, the New Brunswick Ward moved from River Road, Piscataway and was formally organized to become the East Brunswick Ward. The ward boundaries include much of Middlesex County, plus a portion of Franklin Township in Somerset County, and our records number more than 500 members.

Rabbi Joshua S. Finkelstein

The East Brunswick Jewish Center was founded in 1958 and is a welcoming, leading, pluralistic congregation that is affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

EBJC is based upon the three pillars of Judaism, Torah (Study) Avodah (Worship) and Gemilut Hasadim (Acts of Charity and Loving kindness).

We provide a wide variety of religious, educational, cultural, social and activist programs for enhancing meaning in our individual and communal lives, led by our Rabbi, an exceptional professional staff, and an open and growing team of volunteers. We seek to enable our diverse and multi-generational membership to experience Judaism and God in ways that have personal meaning within a communal family.

  • Imam and Muslim Chaplain, Drew University

Mr. Syed Naqvi

  • Chair, National Islamic Committee on Scouting

In 1982, the National Islamic Committee on Scouting was formed by a group of concerned Muslims who represented many national Muslim organizations. That same year, the Islamic Council on Scouting of North America was est. in New York

There are several Islamic terms with which scouters should be familiar with:

  • Islam: Voluntary acceptance of the will of Allah and His commands.

  • Muslim: A person who freely and consciously accepts the Islamic way of life, and practices it.

  • Qur’an: The sacred book of Islam.

  • Iman: One of the three dimensions of the Islamic religion which refers to the strength of conviction, or faith, of a Muslim.

  • Basic Beliefs: The five fundamental Islamic beliefs are Tawhid (Oneness of Allah), Risalah (Prophethood), Yaum al-Akhira wa Ma’ad (Day of Judgment and Life After Death), Ghaib (Angels and the Unseen), and Kutub (All the Books From Allah).

There are five pillars of Islam (or foundations of faith):

  1. A Muslim boy of Boy Scout-age must offer prayers five times a day

  2. Before he can begin, the youth will need to wash himself in the prescribed way.

  3. With other men and boys, he will attend the mosque (or other suitable area) to say prayers.

  4. The Muslim Boy Scout will need to fast the whole month of Ramadan from dawn to sunset (no food or drink).

  5. Additional pillars of the faith are giving to the needy, openly declaring faith in Allah and Muhammad as His last messenger, and making a pilgrimage at least once during one’s lifetime to the first House of God in Mecca.

Saint Bartholomew Church

Reverend Father

Thomas Walsh

Saint Bartholomew Church is a parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen.

Realizing a universal human dignity, we are a worshipping community that embraces all people of all cultures.

The need for a parish in East Brunswick became apparent in the late 1950's because of rapid population growth. Middlesex County was then part of the Diocese of Trenton, which was under the leadership of Bishop George Ahr. It was on June 12, 1959, that the Bishop appointed Father J. Morgan Kelly to begin the formation of a new parish which was to be called Saint Bartholomew.

A parish census in October of 1959 indicated that the Saint Bartholomew family consisted of 879 families. For three years, Sunday Mass was celebrated at Memorial School. 1962, we moved into our church building on Ryders Lane. This new building contained not only a church, but an auditorium / gymnasium, kitchen facilities, and four classrooms. By September 1964, Father Kelly opened the Parish School of Saint Bartholomew with 130 pupils in grades 1 and 2. Each year a grade was added until we reached the eighth grade. A recreation center, Kelly Gym, was completed in the fall of 1972 leaving the Church Hall available for other parish uses. In 1982, Saint Bartholomew Parish was assimilated into the newly created Diocese of Metuchen, under the leadership of Bishop Theodore E. McCarrick.

There are over 4000 families in our parish community, and over 400 students in our school. The members of the Parish Family have been enriched spiritually, socially, and academically by their association with Saint Bartholomew Church.

Pastor Sam Awwad

East Brunswick Baptist Church began in 1968 when 5 families from Raritan Valley Baptist Church in Edison, realizing there was no Baptist Church in East Brunswick, formed EBBC, becoming a constituted Church in 1970 and meeting at Frost school.

In 1972 the group had grown to the point that they bought 5 acres of overgrown orchard known as 456 Ryders Lane with the plan to build a house of Worship.

Over the next 16 years they continued to grow and meet at Frost , then at a home they purchased on Dutch road and finally at Memorial school until the building at 456 Ryders Lane was built in September of 1986. After nearly 2 years of finishing and getting all the approvals the building at 456 became the home of EBBC.

EBBC is a diverse congregation of different races, nationalities, ages and Christian experiences and have a newly called Pastor. We are excited about our opportunities of service to our community and our GOD.
