mandated 
khalifa,

ardship over nature, but he 
was probably the fi rst. Zoro-
astrians see themselves as 
the caretakers of the Seven 
Creations (sky, water, earth, 
plants, animals, humans, and 
fi re) and are so concerned 
with the purity of nature 
that they are forbidden from 
entering rivers for fear of 
polluting the water.
