CHAPTER I. HOW DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF WRITING.

    1. Why is it important to know the importance of writing .

Writing is an essential part of college, but it’s also essential for most professions, your personal life, and your community participation. You may not realize just how much writing you do—an email to your boss or employees, a note to your child’s teacher, your resume and cover letter, a survey about improvements to your city or neighborhood, or a text asking your partner to do something for you. We are all writers and communicators[1,21].
Writing is essential job skill . Writing is the primary basis upon which one’s learning and intellect will be judged. Writing skill equips us with communication and thinking skill --- It also fosters our ability to explain and refine our ideas to others and ourselves. Writing skills are an important part of communication. Good writing skill allow you to communicate your message with clarity and ease to a far larger audience than through face to face or telephone conversations. You might be called upon to write a report ,plan or strategy at work, write a grant application or press release within a volunteering role, or you may fancy communicating your ideas online via a blog, and of course ,a well written CV or resume with no spelling or grammatical mistakes is essential if you want a new job. Poor writing skills create poor first impressions and many readers will have an immediate negative reaction if they spot a spelling or grammatical mistake. As just one example, a spelling mistake on a commercial web page may cause potential customers to doubt the credibility of the website and the organization[1,29].
Correct grammar, punctuation and spelling are key in written communications. The reader will form an opinion of you , the author, based on both the content and presentation and errors are likely to lead them to form a negative impression. All written communications should therefore be re-read before sending to print or hitting the send button in the case of emails, as it is likely that there will be errors. Do not assume that spelling and grammar checkers will identify all mistakes as many incorrect words can indeed be spelt correctly for example when there is used instead of there . Writing skill will improve your communication skills. It filter your knowledge and brain to the point of value. It communicates the point that is important for others. It’s not about speaking 1000 words simultaneously, it about communicates with the reader/ listeners one by one. Good writing skills in the workplace helps you in several ways.It opens new doors and helps you work towards your goals and build your career. Good writing skills also let you express yourself, help you become more clear and concise and allow you to stand out as compared with the rest[3,28].
To write effective and appropriate business messages, you need to know your readers. Are you addressing multiple readers or a single reader? How much knowledge do your readers have of your subject, and what issues concern them most? These are just some of the questions to consider before you start writing your message. Closely tied with knowing your readers is knowing your purpose for writing. Do you need to inform customers about a new policy, or do you need to persuade employees to adopt a new business practice? Knowing your purpose will focus your message, making it clear to readers why it is important to them.
In addition, identifying who your audience is and what your purpose is will guide you in selecting an appropriate tone for your business message. Tone is a significant element in writing – one that affects how the reader will respond to your message. Tone refers to the writer's attitude toward the reader and subject matter as expressed in the way the message is written. Have you ever received a memo that annoyed you by its tone? For example, it might have been patronizing or too familiar. The key to controlling the tone of your writing is to put yourself in the place of your reader. And you need to carefully choose the words that will create the right tone for your message. When you know who your readers are and what your purpose is, you can tailor your tone to suit them. This will help you create more effective business messages. This course addresses ways to identify your readers and to create messages that convey the appropriate tone for different reader roles. It also outlines how to write effectively for the three most common reasons for writing a business document – to inform, respond, or persuade[3,35].
The result of the research shows that guided writing could improve the students’ writing skill. Through guided writing, the students showed great interest to be actively involved and participating in the teaching and learning process. The students were able to construct sentences correctly. In this case, the sentences they constructed were based on the researcher’s explanation and examples. They also used more vocabularies in their writing. The improvements of the mean scores showed that there was an improvement on the students’ writing skill. Therefore, it could be concluded that guided writing could improve the students’ writing skill. Based on the result of the study above, the researcher suggests that English teachers had better implement guided writing in their class in order to help the students improve their writing skill[2,31].
The teaching of writing in Senior High School is just as important as the teaching of other skills as basic language skills. Students should master writing skill as good as the other skills since writing skill also gives contribution to improve students’ competence in communication. Teaching writing in senior high school is a good way to prepare students in globalization era. Based on the 2004 Senior High School Curriculum, students need to know how to write letters, short message, advertisement, news, electronic mail, etc. Moreover, students should be able to master the new genres of text which required the students’ writing skill. In conclusion, good writing skills are required to achieve both academic purpose and communicative purpose[2,45].
Based on the problems stated above, the researcher wants to improve the students’ writing skills through guided writing technique because it can make them write easily, and also practice to write is the best way to learn writing. Furthermore, guided writing is a teaching strategy that can be used to extend and develop text written during independent writing. It involves a teacher: guiding a small group of students in their attempts to create individual written texts; responding to students' attempts; and extending students' thinking during the process. Guided writing is useful for a range of teaching purposes. It allows students to consider audience, purpose, topic, selection of text type, etc, when planning their writing. It allows writers to focus on conventions such as spelling, 17 punctuation, standard usage, and handwriting. It also may be used to encourage students to revise and edit their writing. The focus for each session could be on one of the 'authorial' aspects of writing, such as clarifying and extending ideas or organising and planning the structure of a text. Students' writing can be evaluated during the guided writing process as the teacher moves around the group. The products can also be analysed more closely afterwards and used as work samples in portfolios or records of development[4.38].
This nature of writing can be discouraging as it is slow and often seems as if no progress is taking place. Therefore, calling students’ attention to the progress they’ve made and rewarding it becomes important. Implementing the portfolio method, in which each student’s exemplary work is placed in a separate folder is a great method to use as students can actually see the progress they’ve made, from first essay to last, over a term. They teacher may also choose to reward such progress. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of using melodic sentence structure on enhancing the pupils' ability to write sentences. The study adopted a mixed-method approach where two types of data collection tools were used-a pre-test and a post-test as well as an interview. The participants of this study were Year Five pupils from a rural area school at Southern Perak. There were altogether 20 pupils involved in this study who had problems in writing sentences with correct sentence structure. Based on the findings, the pre-test and post-test results showed that the mean score of post-test is significantly higher than the pre-test[5,64].
This increase in post-test indicated positive improvement in the pupil's performance level in sentence writing. The findings from the interview revealed that the pupils have positive perceptions about using the melodic sentence structure as a strategy to improve sentence writing. Five themes obtained from the interview summarized all the perceptions of pupils' in the effectiveness of using this type of sentence structure on improving sentence writing. The findings strongly concluded that melodic sentence structures or the help of using songs and music to write sentences can be an effective tool in aiding the pupils to master certain sentence structures. What should foreign language teachers do to help their students improve their linguistic skills? Many are the ways how teachers can support their students´ learning process. There are a variety of methods, strategies, techniques, as well as materials and resources we can rely on in order for our students to succeed in the development of their skills. Teachers can get ideas on what to do from published research, presentations at academic events, informal conversations with colleagues, online resources, and their own language learning experience[10,12].
