Russian-NATO military delegations begin talks in Moscow

MOSCOW. July 23 (Interfax) - Russia and NATO's military delegations are discussing European security in Moscow.
"Your visit is very important for broadening the dialog between Russia and NATO," Russian General Staff Chief, General of the Army Nikolai Makarov told Chairman of NATO's Military Committee, Italian Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola.
"We will sum up first results of the work done since the Russia-NATO Council convened in Brussels at the level of General Staff chiefs, and we will discuss European security and issues of mutual interest," Makarov said.
"You laid wreaths to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier yesterday," he told Di Paola. "We are happy that you are joining celebrations of the 65th anniversary of the victory in World War II this year," Makarov said.
Di Paola said in turn that it was a great honor for him to lay a wreath to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Beginning the talks at the Defense Ministry headquarters in Moscow, Di Paola said with a smile: "I have been in this room so many times that I feel at home here."
"I was accorded a warm and cordial welcome here, which matched the weather. I would like to make special mention of Russian citizens' hospitality. This is your main asset," he said.

MOSCOW, July 23 (Itar-Tass) -- Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Admiral Giampaolo di Paola will discuss military cooperation with Russia’s Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces Nikolai Makarov on Friday.
Di Paola told Tass in Brussels the first visit to Moscow of a high-ranking military official of the alliance was a result of “political reset” in relations following the crisis caused by the war in Georgia in 2008.
“Political reset does not mean that we have no contradictions, but it testifies that we are resolute to restore and strengthen mutual trust,” di Paola said.
The Russian defense ministry said “the parties plan to sum up intermediary results of Russia-NATO interaction in 2010 and consider future prospects. Priority attention will be paid to the fight against sea piracy, rear logistics, and interaction in the settlement in Afghanistan.”
