Illuminating Fixtures and Light Sources
It is possible to create the illusion of a light source inside a fixture (Fig. 24.37). This works 
when the fixture has an opening, like ceiling lights, enclosed with an encasement or behind a 
see-through material like a lamp shade. When you’re working, consider taking advantage of 
SketchUp’s ability to apply two different materials to a face. A SketchUp face has two sides; 
each side can receive a different material and each material can have a different texture 
rendering value.
For the inside material (the one facing the light source) provide some level of IRP reflection 
value; doing so will cause the light source to illuminate and reflect, creating the illusion of a 
light source or bulb (Fig. 24.38, Fig. 24.39).
Transparent Fixtures
Simulated lights will cast through transparent surfaces such as glass fixtures and light shades. 
In these instances, the transparent enclosure will be illuminated. The lower the material 
opacity, the brighter the surface illumination of the fixture will be. Light passing through 
the material will take on the color of the surface. To achieve this effect, ensure the surface 
encasement of the fixture has some transparency (Fig. 24.40, Fig. 24.41).
