Bi-weekly letters to the editors—brief & one topic per letter
8/25/14 Paul sent the following to Freeport, Rockford, Rock River Times, Galena, Sterling, Mount Carroll/Savanna: The 2014 gubernatorial election will potentially be monumental for Illinois working families. While Pat Quinn isn’t perfect, at least he is attempting to help the average people of our state. If Bruce Rauner becomes governor, Illinoisans in general could stand to lose. Rauner the businessman has a history of outsourcing jobs through the companies he either owns or sits on the boards of (H-Cube, Polymer Group, VeriFone). He also has had a negative impact on working people in Illinois, laying off employees (Zefer, DB Aviation) without offering severance packages while selling the company in the name of profit. Rauner’s company, GTCR, also created Forefront Education which scammed students attending the Illinois School of Health Careers into believing they could become CNA’s upon graduation even though the program never received certification from the Illinois Department of Public Health. The assumption that could be made is that Bruce Rauner isn’t concerned about working class Illinoisans; he is concerned about the wealthiest 1% making even more money.

Election plan
Per Jim Reed, Jr.; Government Relations & Charlie McBarron; Communications/Public Relations:
This election is all about turnout! Success in this election will be determined by the ability of all of us to activate our members and staff. Help us achieve one main goal: Get members, staff, & family voting for the IEA/IPACE recommended candidates: Gov. Quinn is the one candidate who believes in public education, opposes school vouchers, supports limits on charter school expansion and who supports the rights of IEA and other public employee unions to bargain contracts covering, not only compensation, but teaching and learning conditions as well. We have key races at all levels of government, both state and federal; including targeted races for Bustos (CD 17- Moline, Peoria, Rockford, Rushville, Sterling) & Smiddy (HD 71- Moline, Sterling)
IEA supports approval of an advisory referendum asking whether the minimum wage in the state should be raised to $10 an hour.
IEA also supports the proposed amendment to the state constitution that would ban voter discrimination based on the voter’s “race, color, ethnicity, status as a member of a language minority, sex, sexual orientation or income.”
IEA supports the Millionaire Surcharge Advisory Constitutional Amendment: (Ballot Language): Should the Illinois Constitution be amended to require that each school district receive additional revenue, based on their number of students, from an additional 3% tax on income greater than one million dollars?
Talking Points
-
This is the simplest and best thing we voters can do to help our schools and students. With this extra billion dollars, we can reduce class sizes, recruit and retain better teachers and upgrade classroom materials to help our students have a better chance to learn and prepare for careers or college.
-
Millionaires have lawyers and accountants to help them get tax loopholes and breaks the rest of us don’t get. In Illinois, many millionaires pay just over 2% in taxes while the rest of us pay 5%. That’s not equal and it’s not fair. The 3% surcharge will help to ensure that the millionaires pay their fair share.
DO NOT SEND POLITICAL EMAIL TO/FROM SCHOOL EMAIL ADDRESSES.
The key to getting members and staff engaged is providing you with a variety of activities and opportunities that will enable each of you to utilize your own expertise and talents to help achieve the IEA campaign goal. This is going to have to be a global effort that includes Board, Staff, GPAs and members.
-
Identify people in each work site to contact every member to talk to them about the importance of this election.
-
TALK to people directly; avoid using email.
-
Work with your members, UD, GPA to arrange campaign activities every member can participate in. Here's a list of examples:
-
Be the "host" for a member or campaign event in the office, i.e., phone bank, candidate gathering, letter-writing session where you greet people, stay during the event, straighten up and close the office when finished.
-
Volunteer at a member-to-member event, such as making campaign phone calls to members, writing postcards to members, or handing out leaflets at member events.
-
Contact seven people, create a list of supporters, turn in lists for use in the "Get Out The Vote" (GOTV) effort. You could make this a contest between schools.
-
Get together with your colleagues. Have pizza and make calls. We'll give you materials and a script to do it.
-
Contact retired chapters and reach out to IRTA members with information on the Quinn/Rauner differences.
-
Volunteer at a campaign event for a state race, such as making campaign phone calls to the public, writing postcards to the public or letters to the editor, handing out leaflets to the public.
-
Give someone a ride to the polls
