In one century of strenuous research numerous 
resources about Leonardo da Vinci have been 
collected, reviewed, edited and annotated,
including letters, contracts, poems, receipts, and 
biographies. Biographical and artistic data have 
been 
checked 
and 
rechecked, 
sometimes 
corroborating and sometimes changing our 
previous ideas and an abundance of new facts has 
been revealed. Long lost works have been 
rediscovered and every single known piece has 
been studied in its formal, iconographic, 
functional and genetic aspects. The artist‘s 
character, his daily habits, his working methods, 
his personal attitudes, and his artistic and 
political viewpoints have been traced, as well as 
the peculiarities of the people with whom he had 
contact. In this way modern history of art has 
formed an image of da Vinci that is much nearer 
to truth than those presented by his biographers.
