the article deals with the current trends and issues impacting digital
pedagogy. The practical approaches to student-centered teaching learning and
collaboration as well as the trending platforms and tools utilized in the digital learning
environment to enable diagnosing, teaching/learning, assessing, communicating and
also, the securing of data are examined. The article not only explores current issues in
digital pedagogy but also provides information about various ways to mitigate against
these issues. Moreover, the importance of exploring the current trends and issues is
highlighted.
The 21
st
century era of technology has ushered into existence various digital
systems, tools, equipment, platforms and software. Nowadays, most, if not all
individuals are engaged in the digital world. In today’s society, there is a significant
increase in the use of cellphones, mobile applications, and electronic communication.
One other important aspect of our society that has been impacted by the digital world
is that of education. Education no longer exists in isolation and/or is only attainable by

those of affluent or privileged backgrounds. Education is now accessible via the click
of a button, the sound of one’s voice as well as the possession of basic ICT skills. It is
based on this premise that the concept of digital pedagogy be keenly examined.
Digital pedagogy is embedding computer-based digital technologies in the art of
learning, which allow the enriching processes of learning, teaching and assessing
throughout the course. In other words, digital pedagogy is fusing the traditional
approaches to teaching/learning and assessing with digital technology in an effort to
enhance learning. What does this mean? It means that teaching can no longer be viewed
as “chalk and talk” but as a facilitated approach to engage and allow learners to utilize
modern day digital technologies and become actively involved in the learning process
while applying critical thinking skills.
Jean Piaget’s theory of constructivism clearly suggests that learners learn best by
doing, and also by collaborating with peers. Therefore, if digital pedagogy is to be
effectively employed, this needs to be carefully considered. Student-centered learning
must play a vital role in engaging learners on digital platforms. Additionally,
instructors, administrators and educational stakeholders must have knowledge of the
trends and issues surrounding digital pedagogy.
The trends in digital pedagogy includes the platforms, tools, software and equipment
and resources that will aid in delivering effective teaching/learning in a digital
environment. Digital technologies considered should allow teaching/learning in both
synchronous and asynchronous modes. Therefore, a holistic approach should be taken
in the selection of digital technologies as well as the inculcating of student-centeredness
in the online learning environment. One way of achieving this, is to apply the DTACS
model (diagnosing, teaching/learning, assessing, communicating, and securing) fused
with student-centered methodologies in the digital learning environment.
Some tools that are currently used to
diagnose
learners’ knowledge and skillset
are: polling, survey monkey and ‘diagnoser.’ Teaching/learning synchronous platforms
include: Zoom, Microsoft teams, Skype, Google Meet, and Blackboard Collaborate.
Asynchronous platforms include: Google Classroom, Edmodo, and Edulastic. It is
essential to note that asynchronous platforms can be just as effective as synchronous
ones. Learners can be organized into grouping and collaborate via breakout rooms or
using tools such as google docs, google slides, etc., learners can engage in experiential
learning by utilizing the many digital tools available to them and most importantly
learners’ interests can be sparked by the use of gamification which allows learners to
have fun while learning (example: virtual field trips). Instructional aids/materials can

range from online whiteboards (example: Google Jamboard), audio/visuals, tutorials
and simulations, website links, and cloud storage (email, OneDrive, etc.) Of course,
how can the approach of constructivism be applied without motivating and rewarding
learners. The online learning environment allows instructors to motivate students in
various ways. It could be through videos, animated clips, written pieces, or just a
thought for the day. Surely learners will be overjoyed and propelled when they see their
faces or names on a digital certificate or badge or any form of digital material that relays
the message of effort and excellence.
