Box 2-4: The Labor Force Contribution by Economic Activity
 
The influx of expatriate workers has caused successive changes in the composition of the workforce 
according to economic activities and their contribution to the annual rate of change of the total 
workforce, as also shown in Figure (1) The corresponding change in the contribution of the 
components of oil and non-oil activities to the annual rates of change in real GDP are shown in 
Figure (2), where it is noticeable how the contribution of the building and construction sector grew 
during the years when the State of Qatar witnessed wide-ranging urban development across all 
economic activities, whether in influencing the growth rate of the labor force or the GDP.
