Joan Spencer the Dakota County Clerk does an outstanding job of keeping everything organized! Siouxland Cares have given the South Sioux City schools a youth survey for their students to answer about alcohol and other drugs and we will be getting the results in the late summer or fall. They had three cases for teen court last month and they also did compliance checks where they had an underage kids go in to liquor stores and see if they could purchase alcohol and they had a 100% compliance rate, no one sold to the youth. Yea!
-
Linnea Fletcher is with Planned Parenthood of the Heartlands and she shared that they are almost to the end of the first year of a 5-million-dollar grant, they address the issues of teen pregnancy in Woodbury and Dakota Counties. Part of what they are doing is putting together a youth advisory board, their second meeting will be here at the South Sioux library. They youth decided they would like to take turns holding one in Sioux City and then one in South Sioux City and back and forth. This will give the agency a teen perspective, it so often seems as adults we think we have all the answers. They will be able to talk about the issues and have some funding to help with them.
-
Kelly Flynn with the City of South Sioux City shared they have a lot of exciting things going on with the expansions in South Sioux. Kelly talked about Green Star energy and the solar farm coming this summer and how Lance and the City are great at looking outside the box for renewable energy sources. They also have five children in the enrollment process so over all they have 10 children that are looking for mentors. They are an evidence based mentoring program, they only ask four hours a month of time from a mentor many do much more then that but 4 is fine. There many people at our meeting today that were already mentors and it was pointed out that Linda Philips had been doing it for the longest period of time. Their big Fund raiser coming up is called “Over the Edge” where people can donate to have someone repel off the Howard Johnson Building it takes 1000 dollars per person. They hope to raise 90 thousand dollars. Corrin with the YMCA is willing to repel! Way to go! Send your donations to her and lets send her over the edge

Agenda Item #12: Presentation by: Josh Martin and John Ulrich with DHHS on “What is Alternative Response?”:
Alternative Response is a new approach to help families with less severe reports of child abuse and/or neglect, connect with the supports and services they need in order to enhance the parent’s ability to keep their children safe and healthy.
Research shows that families who receive an assessment rather than an investigation are more likely to be receptive to and engage in services when they are approached in a non-adversarial, non-accusatory manner. Alternative Response eligible families will be assigned to a Children and Family Services Specialist (CFSS) who will begin the assessment process.
The CFSS will conduct family assessments to determine the family’s strengths and needs as well as assess for child safety. Families will be connected to the supports and services they need in order to enhance the parent’s ability to keep their children safe and healthy.
