Pinocchio: Oh! How nice! I’ll go with you.
(Pinocchio, the Fox and the Cat walked away.)
Scene III. In the house of the Beautiful Child with Blue hair. (Pinocchio was in bed. The doctors came. They were a Monkey and a Parrot.)
Child: Good morning, doctors. Come in, please. Here he is.
(The doctors came up to Pinocchio.)
Child: Is this poor puppet alive or dead?
Monkey: I think that the puppet is dead; but if he is not dead, then he is alive.
Parrot: I think that the puppet is alive; but if he is not alive, then he is dead.
(The doctors went away. The Child came up to Pinocchio with some medicine in her hand.)
Child: Drink it. I’ll give you a piece of sugar with it.
Pinocchio: Where is the piece of sugar?
Child: Here it is.
Pinocchio: Give me the piece of sugar first and then I shall take the medicine.
(He ate the sugar, drank the medicine and after a moment jumped out of bed. The Child is very glad.)
Child: Now come here to me and tell me your story.
Pinocchio: The showman at the theatre gave me five gold pieces. I wanted to buy a new coat for my Papa and a school-book.
Child: Where are the pieces of gold?
Pinocchio: I lost them yesterday! (Suddenly his nose began to grow.)
Child: Where did you lose them?
Pinocchio: In the forest near your house. (His nose grew more.)
Child: If you lost them near my house, we shall look for them. We shall find them.
Pinocchio: Oh! I think that I did not lose the gold pieces. I swallowed them with your medicine. (At the third lie his nose grew again. The Child looked at him and laughed.) What are you laughing at?
Child: I am laughing at the lie that you told me a minute ago.
Pinocchio: And how do you know that I told a lie?
Child: My dear boy, I am a fairy and we fairies know lies at once. Your lie has a long nose! (Pinocchio cried and tried to run away.)
Pinocchio: I am a bad puppet/ I do not listen to anybody. But now I shall be good.
(All the characters came on the stage. Pinocchio took off his cap and nose.)
