Writing a letter
In both informal and formal French letters, there usually does not appear any address at the top:
A business letter is written on letterhead that provides the sender’s information, and a personal
letter is often written on personalized stationery that also provides the sender’s information.
Place and date
Regardless of whether or not letterhead is used, the sender’s location (usually a city) appears at the
top right of a letter and is separated from the date by a comma as follows:
Avignon, le 11 mars 2014
Salutations
In French and in English, the main difference between informal and formal salutations is the use
of a title used in formal letters.
