Facilities at Machias:
Double room accommodations are available in Dorward Hall, the same building that houses the Book Arts Studio. There are centralized bathroom and shower facilities near the rooms, with lounge areas on each floor. Nearby, the Kilburn Commons dining facility will offer a variety of meal options, including vegetarian and salad bar offerings. The weather in July in Maine is comfortable with cool nights and warm days. There may be times that coastal fog will be present, but there is beauty in its movement from sea through blueberry fields and into the woods. Swimming is available at the campus fitness center in an indoor pool. There is also a weight room and aerobic machines. Day passes are available at a small fee.
Shopping in Machias:
There are a number of stores and shops, two health food stores, a large grocery store, and two apothecaries.
Medical Facilities include Downeast Community Hosptital, a full service facility with Lifeflight services to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. There are also numerous physicians and dentists available.
Please bring or ship ahead (allow 2 weeks) via UPS, Federal Express or Parcel Post: Personal toiletries, sunscreen, insect repellent, flashlight, clock, rain gear, small fan and beach stuff. Linen packets for your room will be provided. This includes a towel, face cloth, sheets, pillow, pillow case and a blanket. Swim caps are needed if you intend to use the indoor pool.
