About
often means 'here, there, everywhere'.
To put it about is to place something here, there, and who knows where
else. The it means a piece of news, a tasty scandal, something the
speaker disapproves of. To put it about means to spread gossip.
After Mary the gossip put it about that he had once been in prison,
George was not welcome anywhere in the village.

it all across so well. I can understand it now.

To put something across means to put some information, a new idea
perhaps, across an imaginary table. 'To put something across well' means
'to successfully communicate it'.
