hold out, hold out for
Out
is often the opposite of in, and holding out is the exact opposite of
giving in
. When you give in, you surrender, but when you hold out, you
resist.
In a tough negotiation, both sides were holding out for top dollar. Neither
was prepared to give in.

By extension, any armed robbery is a hold up.
In a hold up, you can't move. By further extension, when you are stuck in a
traffic jam, you also can't move. And we say the same thing.
