go through, go through with
To go
through
something you must be inside it and trying to get outside at
the far side.
If you have a lot of work, don't you feel as if you are inside it? This is very
similar to get through but without the sense of struggle. We also say run
through, and this is even easier.
Today, I
got through
a lot of work. (So I'm tired.)
Today, I went through a lot of work. (So I'm happy.)
Today, I
ran through
a lot of work. (Easy. Do you want me to do more?)
Fat Fat Freddie went through a lot of hamburgers, even though a
scientist would say that a lot of hamburgers went through Fat Fat
Freddie.
GO THROUGH
Inseparable two-word verb
No problem.
Sometimes we have a job to do that we don't feel like doing, or we have
to visit the dentist. We sigh. And then we say something like, 'I'll just have
to go through with it.' We won't enjoy it but we'll do it anyway.
Three-word verb
No problem.
go under
This has two meanings. One is exactly the same as
come under
or
fall
under
. Cats and dogs both go
under
the heading of mammals. Mammals
go under the heading of vertebrates.


Inseparable two-word verb
No problem.
The other meaning is what happened to the Titanic. It sank. It went under.
So this is what we say of a bankrupt business.
'What happened to the car dealer on the corner?'
'It went under.'
It went out of business.
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
go up against
While
up
can have the idea of reaching a limit,
against
always has the idea
of 'confrontation'
Go up against a barrier, a strong obstacle to what you want. A challenge.
It is very similar to
come up against
, but it is more willful, more deliberate.
Hermione wanted to be a policewoman, but she came up against the fact
that she was not tall enough. The rules were not going to be changed for
her, so she had to
give up
her dream.
(It was not her intention to challenge the rules.)
But
Big Billy the Bad Boxer went up against the best.
(He did it by choice.) That's why he's so slow now.
Three-word verb
. No problem.
go with
To GO WITH someone is a polite expression for spending a whole night
with them.
Inseparable two-word verb
No problem.
go without
'Mum! I want a new computer, and I haven't got the money!'
'What a pity, dear! You'll just have to go without.'
What do poor people do? They go through life without lots of the good
things that they would like. They go without.
do without
means exactly the same.
Inseparable two-word verb
, usually without an object. No problem.
