means to strike, to hit or exceed in competition
beat up
Alan was an aggressive boy who loved beating up his classmates. Later,
he became a football hooligan.
Often,
up
has the sense of completing or finishing a job. Remember
fill up
a bottle, which means 'fill it to the top',
drink up
and so on.
Beating up is what some people do to other people when they don't like
them. They beat them so much that their victims don't ever want to be


beaten again. Thugs particularly like this verb. They beat people up for
fun.
Separable two-word verb

blow
(blow, blew, blown)
What the wind does.
blow away
When the wind blows something
away
, we never see it again. This is also
what happens when somebody gets murdered. We never see them again.
Films tell us that this is how gangsters refer to their victims. They get
blown away. That is, they get murdered. They disappear.
Separable two-word verb
Be careful.
blow out
When a fire dies, it
goes out
. Maybe it is because we feel that the heat of
the fire has gone out of the room. When we extinguish a fire, we
put it out
.
It's
out
now, and we feel the cold, as we often do when we go outdoors.
And when we blow, we blow out the candle or the match.

blow over
Naomi and her family had a terrible fight about her new fiancé, but it's all
blown over now. He has been accepted.
After the storm, the winds still may blow a little, but the storm has gone. It
has blown over. It has gone away from over our heads. It also has the
same idea as
be over
. The storm has finished, it's
over
.
By extension, we use this for any disturbance.
Two-word verb without an object
. No problem.
blow up
This is an explosive verb. When you blow something up, it has a tendency
to fly
up
in the air. If terrorists put a big bomb in the road, the explosion
can make the victim's car fly a long way. If you blow up a bridge, bits of it


will come down minutes later.
