To talk around the subject, to talk round the subject means to be indirect.

what to do with the farm. They talked it over for several days.
We often use
over
in the sense of 'from one side to the other'. For
example, you turn over an omelette - turn it from one side to the other -
when you are cooking it. Therefore talk over means 'to talk carefully about
something from every direction' before coming to a decision.
