get out of
Get
has three main meanings, depending on what follows it. The literal
meaning of get out of is to leave something with a little difficulty, perhaps.
Miriam didn't like her boyfriend's car. It was hard to get out of.
But the question What do you get out of it? is asking what thing do you
get? This get means achieve or obtain. So, What do you get out of being
rude to the tax inspector? means what benefit do you get?

get over
To get something over means to
get
some information, some teaching,
some new ideas perhaps,
over
an imaginary table. 'To get something over'
means 'to successfully communicate it'.
A great mathematician is teaching the quantum mechanics class. This is

put over

, but there is the slight
sense - that you always have with get - of a little difficulty.

Careful. This has a completely different meaning from GET OVER IT.
This GET OVER is a
two-word verb without an object

her every hour of every day for the rest of his life.
Imagine, dear reader, that you are standing next to a wall that is two
metres high. Normally you would not even think of getting over it, but

problem. You would get over that wall.
For English speakers, a bad illness, an emotional loss, an acute
disappointment are all walls that you have to get over. This

'finished'.
Mary took months to get over her flu.
Notice the difference between GET OVER IT and GET IT OVER.
