Dickens and his family traveled to Lausanne, Switzerland in 1846. That same year, Dombey and Son began publishing.

In November 1846, the Dickens family left Lausanne and moved to Paris.
In February 1847, the Dickens family left Paris prematurely. They returned to England early because Charlie Dickens was suffering from scarlet fever. On April 18, Sydney Dickens was born into the family of Charles and Kate.
Dickens's sister, Fanny, died in September 1848. That same year, Dickens' last Christmas book, The Haunted Man, was published.
Dombey and Son deal with the subject of feminism. The main focus of the novel is on what happens when Dombey has a daughter instead of the boy he dreams of.
Mrs. Dombey died shortly after giving birth to her second child, her long-awaited son. Dombey's eldest child was a girl, and Mr. Dombey did not see much use of girls.
But what a girl she was for Dombey and Boy! In the capital of the name and dignity of the house, such a child was simply a key piece of money that could not be invested - a bad boy - nothing more. In Mr. Dombey's view, marriage was not about romance. It was more like a business deal. It was the best product in the best case, a business deal that could produce a son.
Mr. Dombey would have reasoned: The union of marriage with himself should be content and respectful to any healthy woman by the nature of things.
The hope of giving birth to a new partner in such a home could not have aroused the glorious and exciting ambition in the bosom of the smallest ambition in her jeans [15; 7-56].
Throughout the novel, Florence expresses the qualities of love, understanding, and gentleness. Mr. Dombey, on the other hand, represents business and logic. At the end of the novel, Mr. Dombey finally turns to the love and affection that his daughter is giving him.
"So, as I watched a tragic incident, Dombey and Son," Miss Tox said, ending many memories, "indeed, Polly's daughter."
