NIGHT AUDIT AND REPORT MANAGEMENT
This report would be important to the hotel’s maintenance staff and to others in
the housekeeping, reservations, and front office departments. Professional FOMs use
the night audit process to gather and disseminate key operational information. The
specific reports generated and then distributed vary by a hotel’s size, the amenities it
offers, and the specific needs of the hotel’s managers.
Data Management
The amount of data that must be stored by a hotel is significant. Consider the sim-
ple case of a guest who calls the hotel to ask if a pair of shoes left in the room at
check-out was found. In this case, the FOM needs a record of the check-in date and
the room to which the guest was assigned. Sales information, reservation data, room
records, and statistics related to taxes collected, travel agent commissions, specific
guest charges, and telephone activity are just a few more examples of the hundreds of
records that must be maintained. In some cases, local or state laws dictate records to
be maintained and how long they should be kept. In other cases, it is the hotel’s own-
ers or managers who decide to archive selected data.
