Roadmap 1 indicates that we will begin our exploration of the lodging industry by
describing how it fits into the broader travel and tourism industry, and the hospi-
tality industry.

Travel and tourism industry:
All businesses that cater to the needs of the traveling public.
Hospitality industry:
Businesses that provide accommodations (lodging) and foodservices for people
when they are away from their homes.
Travel and Tourism: The Big Picture
Figure 1 provides an overview of the types of organizations that compose the travel
and tourism industry. This brief review of industry segments and the types of organ-
izations within them will help you to learn where hotels fit in the broader industry
of which they are a part. As you review Figure 1, note that there are three major seg-
ments. One (hospitality) includes the accommodations (lodging) sector that will be
discussed in depth in the remainder of this chapter. Transportation services includes
companies that operate airplanes, rental cars, trains, ships, and other ways that peo-
ple travel between their homes, businesses, and destinations. The third sector,
