plan a budget; it is another thing to achieve it. Knowledge of the current finan-
cial situation and discussions about tactics for corrective action can be synergistic,
because committee members can build on each other’s ideas. Department heads will
likely appreciate the participative approach to decision making that is being used.

Policy matters. Policies that affect the conduct of hotel staff members are gen-
erally discussed at executive committee meetings before they are adopted or
modified. Many policies must be applicable to the entire property. For exam-
ple, human resources policies relating to vacation eligibility, acceptance of sup-
pliers’ gifts, and prevention of employee harassment should affect all staff
members in all departments the same way. The executive committee provides
an ideal venue for discussions.
